old fly
A customer came into the shop wanting his money back. The fly I tied only caught 20-25 fish and it was already coming apart. We had a good laugh, the hackle was missing and the thread was hanging down. He said he still was catching fish. I guess the extra time on a fly is just to make it look nice so the fishermen will buy it.
I dump them when I loose them, OR when the hook is to far gone to sharpen anymore.
You can cut down and scuff up destroyed dry flies and fish them below the surface. The scruffier, the better.
krouseb's go it right. A well tied fly will last a long time and it will keep catching fish long after it stops looking like it just came from the shop. The shop ties flies for the fisherman....not the fish. lol

I find the closest tree and embed the fly into that tree. Works every time. As an added bonus, it lets me get rid of some potentially frayed tippet and occasionally leader material!
