Went to a local reservoir to give the outboard a shakedown cruise.
The good: Caught a nice rainbow on my first cast, the motor worked perfectly.
The bad: Caught a nice rainbow on my first cast, the next 2.5 hrs were fishless, finally got 3 pickerel as time ran out.
The ugly: Broke the seat back on the pedestal seat while reaching back to adjust my trolling motor! Fortunately said incident was not witnessed by any of my friends. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
Fished a new pond a local told me about! Around 20 bluegill only 5 in the keeper size, 5 crappie and 5-10 baby 6"-8" large mouth bass. All fish returned unharmed. Overall a fun time!

This past weekend four different spec of fish all in the same spot with the same fly. LMB, chain pickeral, crappie, and the biggest brown trout I ever caught, 3-4 lbs. All fish were caught on a synthetic black and white clouser dredged along the bottom, except for the crappie which hit it on the drift down. All were released except for the trout which was a gift to the landowner who let me park and shove off from his place.

Who has time for stress when there are fish to catch.

I fished the same public lake both Saturday and Sunday from the bass boat.
The good: I caught 14 sandbass (aka whitebass) on my 6 wt. and released them.
The bad: I caught all my crappie on a spinning rig, cleaned them and put them in the freezer.
The ugly: I saw several carp clooping in a foam line near the bank and I cast to one of them with the black and chartruese bugger I had tied on my 4 wt and although he took it, I missed him.
Well, I guess you can call me an "opportunity" fisherman in the true sense of the word 'cause I'm ready for any opportunity that presents itself.
Went out over the weekend for some night time gill fishing. I haven't had any luck yet catching them during the daylight hours, they come to the surface to feed right at dusk and we've been staying out till around 10:00 or so with good success. Caught enough to make us some fish tacos for dinner the next night. Yum.
I was using a black gurgle pop tied from the recipes on this site, along with a hare's ear nymph for a dropper. They sure do like that combo!
I tell you what, casting in the dark is an adventure. It's fun being out under the full moon, though.

full moon sunday, bream supposed to be on the bed, temp plummeted, wind roared, played golf. they better look-out tomorrow!!!
Hey Robert,
The fish turned on here this weekend.
I had commitments that wouldn't wait. But
this a.m. I was out, full of anticipation.
Water temps had dropped 10 degrees, wind
was up, waves kept building, only thing I
caught was a chill*G* We are very very
close to some hot fishing. Any day now.
All we need is a few warm days and I'll
be in the fish. I've been saying that
for 3 weeks now.*G* But it's gonna happen,
and soon!*G* Warm regards, Jim
Didn't fish over the weekend due to terrible weather. Thursday evening and friday morning were good to me. Thursday yielded 5 wipers in the 7-9 pound range. Friday another 5 wipers but a bit smaller.
The good
Thursday: caught crappie up to 2lbs from a farm pond
Friday: coached my son's base ball game
saturday: guided a man who hooked a 20" rainbow plus many more
sunday: rested and worked on the lawn
the bad...I guess you can say it's all good as long as I'm still drawing breath
the ugly..who am I to judge that?

Here In Central Ok fishing is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are hammering big LM bass and large Catfish. We also had some bass kick our behinds as they are in shallow water and heavy cover. One literally sewed me to a downed tree by going under and over it twice in the first minute of our battle(her escape.)
We also caught the years first big Crappie (13-15 inches)in shallow water. My Buddy thinks the Crappie are just getting started.
after a nice warm up we have had some cool (Cold) weather and nasty wind. The fish seem to bite best after 4.
I have also heard the walleye are hitting in lake hefner. Most people use bait but with a sinking line it should be possible.
Like I told Roger about the cold front, it came through so I only got a few bites and picked up one little gill on a Gill Getter Saturday over on the Little Lake Jackson Canal behind my sister's house. Haven't gotten out on a lake in while so I just might have to do that soon.
Fishing was better on Thursday before the front. Just ask Don Ingram. We both did real good on both bream and LMB. I even caught a little warmouth. Don kept my 16" LMB and his 14.5" LMB. Great top-water action with pushers and poppers http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif.

Wasn't able to get out last weekend but except for nailing my biggest ever carp a few weeks ago on a pattern I copied from OkieBass, I've had a horrible spring with a couple of zero outings and/or small fish the other times. I'm going to my parents this Sunday and fish some old trusty farm ponds where I rarely come up empty handied for some nice size largemouth. The perfect way to end a fishing slump!
The good-I got out for the first time of the year
the horrible-I got skunked and to *** insult to injury THE SPINFISHERMAN BESIDE ME CAUGHT 2 BROWN TROUT! http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/frown.gif And worst of all is that ive never caught a brownie
I forgot to point out the ugly-It was in the midle of downtown hull"quebec" and the river was flooded with garbage and everywhere else was covered in graffiti!
The bad - was not able to get out last Saturday
The good - did go Sunday from 3:30pm to 7:00pm and caught 25 bluegill and 16 rainbow
The bad -- IT WAS VERY COLD!
Overall, had a great time and hope to repeat it this weekend - you all come down to Tennessee and go with me - that goes for you to Ohiotuber!

I went trout fishing on Saturday and did pretty well. On Sunday I went to a family picnic at Spavinaw State Park and did a little fishing in Spavinaw Creek. I caught 2 white bass and 3 bluegill before lunch and spent the afternoon visiting with brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. Someone had obviously caught a lot of white bass there in the recent past because one section of the creek bottom was littered with a couple hundred carcasses of fileted white bass. There were also several large gar surfacing but I didn't have any gar flies with me.

I took my kids (10 yr. old son and 7 yr. old daughter) on sunday to the lake at our sportsman club. They were using Uhhh.. live worm flies and and Uhh.. bubble indicators Yeah Yeah thats it. Anyway I rigged up the 7 yr olds first, I started rigging up the 10 yr olds and my daughter starts hollering she's got one. It was a nice 10" bass, well, my son was fit to be tied not only did his sister catch the first fish but she caught 4 more before he even caught one.
All in all we caught 14 fish that day, 10 gills, 3 bass, and one crappie.
1 dozen worms.............$2.50
lunch for 3...............$10.00
spending an afternoon at the lake with the kids and having them both out fish you.
PRICELESS
Becky - 1 bass and 4 gills
Timmy - 1 bass and 6 gills
Dad - 1 bass and 1 crappie
By the way, yes I was using my fly rod and I caught my fish on a clouser.

I have not been out in about 2 weeks due to lousy weather and work. It's supposed to be another lousy weekend here in NJ so I'm not amused.
Okiebass, I was in Tulsa for business yesterday and flew home today and witnessed that wind you speak of first hand. Man, it was howling and it was not a pleasant landing into the airport! I didn't have any time to fish, but maybe next time. Sure looks like some nice water in the area from the plane.
Lou
OK I'll admit it, Trout and so far with the exception of suckers just rout. Still a little cold here but pike and "eyes" are just around the corner.
Spin
I got a very nice 13" Spotted Bass on Sunday morning. I sent the picture to Robert since I do not know how to post a picture. Also caught a smaller bass and a blue gill.
Love those spots.
Been real busy with other stuff, but caught several 9" to 9 1/2" gills a couple weeks ago..all on a yellow/grizzly wooly worm.
Warren.....I'll be there buddy, but it'll be later this summer or early fall from the looks of it. I can't believe I'm considering going down there after all the times you've insulted me! (maybe I'll just come down & drown ya!) http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif

Been pretty slow in the Texas Hill Country until this weekend. Waded up a small river called the Pedernales. It was 46 degrees and raining when I started. I got a few looks! As it warmed to 60 and the sun came out the fish started biting like crazy. Caught 6 or 7 nice Guadalupe bass (and a couple dinks) and the sunfish were hitting so constantly there were times I would stop fishing a hole even though they were still hitting on nearly every cast. Several of the redbreasts were in the 8 to 9" range, which is pretty big in these rivers. Balances out those 2 fish days! Fly of the day was a chartreuse crystal bugger with yellow marabou tail.

Headed out to a small Fish & Wildlife lake around 1:00 - was launched by 2:00. My friend and I were in our Hobies; one other small jon on the lake. Ended up catching about 3 dozen bluegills and redears. Nothing large but they were fishes! Finally froze out around 5:00 or 5:30 and hit the truck stop on the way home for some "chili" [wife wasn't happy about that!] Broke in my friend's new TFO 2 wgt rod. It's surprizing how cold you can get in a few hours in 50 degree water.
Donald
River up 15 feet, but had to try out my new line. The line worked great, but no fish.
Hey Robert,
Strong winds and frequent cold fronts
still highlight our weather here but the
red eared sunfish are shallow and feisty.
Mostly well back in the lilly pads and hard
to target with the light fly rods but I'm
getting enough 12" to 16" redears to keep a
grin on my chin.*G* Scuds have been the
fly of choice until late in the day when
they are taking white spiders and poppers.
Warm regards, Jim
the good...I finally got down to my local little river over the weekend. the bad... The water is high and fast due to several inches of rain over the last week. I could barely get in, and anything I cast was swept down stream before I could even thing about mending. The spin fisherman upstream from caught a nice size trout.the ugly... However he let it thrash and fight for over a minute before he pulled it up on the bank by the treble hook lure in it's mouth. Then he let it flop around while he cast some more. If I wasn't such a gentleman I would have hauled off and smacked him.
Island Fly,
I got the photo. Nice fish and a nice photo. Thanks for thinking of me.
To Jim Hatch:
Am I reading your last post correctly? You are catching 12" to 16" redears?
Not 12 to 16 OUNCE redears, but 12 to 16 INCH redears? Is that correct?
I've never caught one bigger than 10-inches, and the thing fought like a horse kicking its way out of a burning barn. My mind is fogging over visualizing what a 16-incher does after feeling the hook. Has the surgeon removed the cast from your rod hand yet?
Joe
"Better small than not at all."
Hi Joe,
I live on Lake Moultrie in South Carolina and apparantly it is a really great
area for redears. They are very prolific
here and this is the home of the current
world record. 5 pounds, 7 ounces, but I'm
not sure of the lenght. Better than 16
inches I can assure you. I know of two
other 5+ pounders as well as the current
world record that came out of my home waters. My best red ear landed to date was
16 inches on the money. I have however lost
a number of them that I'm sure exceeded this
measurement, including one on a scud this
past friday that parted a leader of fresh 4
pound Trilene. Then there was the one that
made a two piece out of the beautiful little
cane banty that Pete Lawrence built for me.
That was a sad day. He built me another in
3 wt with more backbone and called it Jim's
Swamp Rat. You can see the rod on his site
as well as a couple of pictures of my red
eared sunfish on his rod. http://blacklabfliesandsupplies.com/Fly%20rods.htm[/url:4c598]
I fish red ears almost exclusively and lose
no sleep over the fact that salmonoids do
not reside in my waters.*G* Our own RW is
coming down from Maine for a couple of days
later this month to try his 1 weight on them. I hope it came with a guarantee.*G*
Maybe an article in that trip.*G*
The red ears have become pretty much an
obsession with me and I dearly enjoy the
time I spend in pursuit of them. They are a
very worthy fish, often given much less
respect than they deserve. If you get down
this way, I'll be happy to put you in some
of thier favorite haunts. Here is a pair
that went over 13" that I got on my little
2 wt. Warm regards, Jimhttp://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/020272.JPG
What little was left of my job focus just went up in smoke. Isn't it a violation of Geneva Convention rules on the treatment of a POW (Prisoner of Work) to show him a photo of two gargantuan redears when he still has a day and a half of captivity to endure before the weekend comes?
Godamighty those are big 'ears! Nothing like that swims in Kansas!
My backup plan to use scuds just got kick-started. But I see from the photo that a popper is tied on your leader? (I might have to try a popper with a scud dropper.)
Thanks for the words and the photos, Jim. If I can get loose for a vacation, coming to see you is high on my wish list of destinations. I've never been to South Carolina or any state on the eastern seaboard except Florida and Georgia. (Florida makes Kansas look like the Himalayas.)
I'm gonna hit "Submit Reply" so I can get back to looking at those fish you caught. That's just unbelievable.
Joe
"Better small than not at all."
With winter fast approaching over here I've been making the most of the clearing water.
The fish have all been as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but I've managed some reasonable fish.
Luckily winter here is still good if you change your target.Smallstream Yellowfish can be great fun at this time of the year.
Hey Joe,
For quite a while, the red ears were
seemingly fairly illusive. I'd catch a few
each trip but the numbers would be greatly
eclipsed by the number of bluegills. Then
a couple of years ago, unusually clear water
allowed me to study them a bit more. When
I'd present my fly, the bluegills were much
quicker on the take than the adult red ears.
Then I found out that fishing a popper or
slider got both the red ears and the blue
gills attention, but the red ear would study
the fly longer than the bluegills before
eating it. When I added a nymph on a
dropper, my catch ratio was more fish caught
but mostly gills. When I went with scuds,
it turned around and was more heavily
weighted to the red ear. To date the scud
is my most effective fly for adult red eared
sunfish. I still catch gills on it but the
red ears probably out number the gills 3 to
1 on a scud pattern. Sometimes very late in
the day, the red ears will show a preference
for top water. Also on heavily overcast
days. The rest of the time scuds are very
effective for me. Hope this helps. Warm
regards, Jim
Jim,
Do you normally fish using one scud, or a scud tandem?
It's interesting, your observations of redear behavior and food preferences. It brings to mind the first redear I caught. That was last spring, and it happened on an overcast day. The sky was fairly bright although cloudy, but then the clouds darkened and it began sprinkling. This was about 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
Something about those raindrops hitting the lake surface provoked the fish; it was like throwing a power switch to ON and they began biting. First one to grab my nymph was that redear about 8-inches long, and he made a believer out of me then and there.
Over west of Topeka there's a WPA/CCC lake built back in the '30s that supposedly has a population of redears. Whether it merely HAS redears or actually produces redears of serious size, I don't know. The lake is some 40 miles away and with the success I've been having fishing closer to home I haven't been willing to devote an entire day to driving over there to try it.
And I'm embarrassed to say that I still haven't fished a scud fly yet. I have got to do that, but right now I'm in the grip of Crappie Fever and have been using other flies. Have you ever caught crappies on a scud?
Since I now carry a backup rod on my trips, I guess there's nothing stopping me from putting a scud on my second rod, huh?
Joe
"Better small than not at all."
Well, here's a bit of it....
Though NOT FF'ing, we did drag flies to pester some salmon at L. Shasta in Ca.
This was the platform that kept our rods out of the water. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/leesoares/BOATDINAH.jpg[/url:90732]
This was the general outcome. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/leesoares/JOHNCARLFISHES.jpg[/url:90732]
This is for the carp guys. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/leesoares/GABBYBIGFISH.jpg[/url:90732]
These are for the nature guys. This was the crew. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/leesoares/THECREW.jpg[/url:90732]
The bugs used are pic'ed at the top and on the left. They get a lot of use when the food base is shad, around here. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/leesoares/CIMG0457.jpg[/url:90732]
The same bugs worked well tossing for the spot-bass and the trout. The only difference seeming to be WHERE you tossed them. :-)
Hi Joe,
Like you, I normally fish two rods from
a boat. I usually rig my longer 3 wt with
a popper or hopper and a scud. The shorty
3 wt gets just a scud. I have not tried
tandem scuds. I'd be up the creek if I get
a double.*G* Warm regards, Jim
