It seems there are a great many of different types of dubbing twisters on the market.
How about opinions re: your favorites....and what are the pros and cons of them.

Don't even know what brand mine is? I got it with my 1st set of tools. It's a 9" Shepards Hook tool. I think it's Materelli?
Shepherd's crook is one style ...what do you think of it vs the others?
I have three types.
The whirl is fast and just fun to watch spin. The prongs on mine separate to open the loop when I take the tension off the thread, and closes when I let it hang. That's nice for inserting material. The con is I need to use hackle pliers to wrap.
The Cal Bird is simple, has a nice long handle and is designed to make dodging the bobbin easy.
With Mitch's bobbin I don't need to dodge anything. It makes one less tool to loose under a pile of materials. It's fun to use. One disadvantage is I can't make a very long loop without running out of vertical space. Then I have to rotate the vise so the bobbin hangs off the edge of the table. On small flies, another disadvantage is there are three strands of thread in the loop. But that's when I use the split thread method.
dubbit tool from lary walker. mine is going on 20+ years

I like the SH style because it gives me more control, and it's easy to use when winding forward. No need to switch to another tool after spinning. I have a solid brass "spinner" that is pretty slick to use, but I seldom pick it up these days.
why would i want a need a dubbing twister in the first place?
just learned 2 things...
1 - there is such a thing a dubbing wax
2 - I've been doing this the hard way :( lol
awesome!
I use my hackle pliers. Ala Poul Jorgensen.
I only have two things to say:
1. I do mine entirely differently.
2. Steven wears mighty bright red nail polish! (Holy Crap!)
I like that vise that is great... I'll have to put it on my wish list, but would probably end up spending the money fishing instead lol
mine is a home made joberdo... a ceramic dresser knob with a screw hook in the backside and on the other side i glued a orange twist on wire connecter fer the handle...
bugman...I love it ...
You would be surprised at the "joberdo's"..[never heard that word:cool:]...I've concocted...maybe I'll gather them up and do a photo some time....
need a pic bugman
I usually just lick my fingers a bit, or stick it in my arm pit...
Ok, heres 2 pictures of the joberdo made from stuff in the junk drawer... the holder is an inverted medicine cup with the bottom cut off then the top was closed off to become the bottom then painted... the dubbing twister/spinner is a simple ceramic cabinet knob with a hook screw in the backside and a wire connecter added to the front fer easy spinning or twisting...

Ivan, that's pretty good stuff! The wire connector is just icing on the cake.
I just use my electrician clip. The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no weight there. You've got to keep a hold on it!
Duckster, nice collection.
I make do with the dubbit. Spinning it is fun.
Coughlin
thats a pretty "kinky" collection you have there duck!
whats you bodkin collection look like?? :D
I just made my own shepard crook from small brass rod and a dubbing tool shown above from a paper clip-- never use the things. BILL:tieone:
I wrote this article for FAOL quite a few years ago, http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flyt...ps/part217.php
They are easy too make.
Ron, I saw that when you posted it ....after... I made most of my similar ones...out of the candle end of a candle stick holders from the thrift store...I like yours better for that style...although with the holders I can add lead shot for the advantages of weight...I suspect yours are heavy enough though...if I were starting now I'd probably do your way and just substitute a cup hook.....cup hooks might be a less expensive source of the hooks and not require bending.....nice job:cool:.
