Fisherkid,

Easy question; gurgle pops in size #12 or size #10 in white, yellow, or chartreuse. I also carry a few in a neutral color such as tan or brown. Good luck! 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

sure thing, fisherkid.

I’ve got two favorites, both of which I’d like to think I invented.

The first is a little foam fly whose name I won’t mention. It’s got eight legs, and is green and black. Here is a photo: [url=http://www.reagleelk.photosite.com/FAOLMarathonTerrestrials/:b7fa3]http://www.reagleelk.photosite.com/FAOLMarathonTerrestrials/[/url:b7fa3]

Second, I like a little size 10 conehead bugger with no hackle. I like them best in olive. When you omit the hackle, and use a conehead, it ends up being a little olive bullet. This fly has probably caught more bluegill for me than I’d like to admit.

size 6-10 poppers and sliders, size 10 woolly buggers with some sparkle to them, and any simple soft hackle under the sun. These are all simple and durable flies which is important when the action is fast. If things slow down, the most effective thing is usually to stick with the same pattern and size that’s been working, but switch colors.

This one is my favorite:

I call it a stone variant for lack of a better name.

You should also look through some of these pictures of some of our previous bluegill swaps from here on FAOL:

Hi Kid,

This time of year, a spider is darned
hard to beat. My favorite is an 8 legged
white widow. Warm regards, Jim

The above are all flies that I’d surely fish with.

In addition, little brown or black patterns (PT nymph, etc. etc.) are great little bluegill flies.

There is some semi-famous quote about 99% of all that fish eat is small, brown and wiggly

Well, I was watching closely when Peter F. posted that he caught 90% of his bluegills and bass last year on a size 8 yellow gurgle-pop.

So, of course, I tied some of those up and headed out. I’ve had a great time fishing almost exclusively that very fly from my kayak.

Lots of bluegills and I may be forced to put a cooler in the back so I can take 'em back home. About every sixth fish is a LM. I’ve also discovered that some pretty big bass like those size 8 gurgle-pops. In fact, the biggest LM I’ve ever caught sucked one of them down last weekend!

Probably not so big for real bass anglers, but big for me – about 20". So right now, I’m liking those gurgle-pops.

Jitterbee, Gill Buster, Peacock Herl Bugger, Soft Hackle, Boa Yarn Leech, Hare n Copper NZ-styled nymph, Gurgle Pop in no particular order. JGW

ol’blue,

that fuzzygrub3 looks like a really nice fly i really think it will be a blue killer!!

                             thanks,
                           FisherKid93

P.S: The pictures are great!! i hope we get more!! I bet some of you better tiers are getting some patterns for your self instead of giving out!!

I have 10 in the panfish archives and the fly of the week last week.

Rick

My own design…“The Rainbow Variant” dry fly. I won’t brag on my own fly, but maybe my ol friend Jim Hatch will post a little testimonial as to how many gills he and a buddy caught the last time they fished it together.
