Yorkshire Guide?

In Yorkshire, England for a week in July for a Family Event. Have one precious day to fish. Usually engage guide in these circumstances, as money buys time and expertise and therefore a better experience. Does anyone know of a good guide for the River Wharf who would respect the previous experience of a lady angler? Or does anyone have a fishing buddy in the area of Addingham/Ilkley?

Be warned that Yorkies are mostly very nice but they can come across as very gruff! I am not saying that this guy is, I have never met him, just that you need to be aware that Yorkshiremen are generaly a bit different.
Hope you have some great fishing, the wharfe is one of those very famous streams that I would like to try myself some day.
All the best.
Mike.

Gruff I can take, it’s patronizing I won’t pay for! Thanks very much for the link. I’ll let you know how it was when I get back.

i don’t know how FAOL feels about endorsments of individual guides, so if i’m out of line, please let me know and i’ll delete this.

Mike Thomas’ suggestion proved to be absolutely golden. had one of those fishing days you know you’ll NEVER forget with the gent whose website is in Mike’s post. caught some truly memorable fish, and learned enough so that i was able to enjoy a second day on my own. this guide also knows how to take some awesome photos as well. (would that i could manage to post on this site. that’s the next thing to learn.)

Mike, sell the car, sell the house, sell the wife and kids–but get to the River Wharf before you pass on to the Great Beyond. Or, better yet, take the wife and kids–the scenery and outdoor fun there are world-class.

Thanks for the tip!

Casey and Mike, nice job; both of you. Hope to see the pictures someday.

Casey, good to hear you had a great time, I know those English trout are not easy to catch, Glad I could be of some help. Would love to see some pics.
All the best.
Mike.

sorry, one and all. simply cannot find the step-by-step instructions for posting photos on this board. send me your “real” e-mail in a pm and I’ll send photos that way. looks like only a small group is curious!

the step-by-step instructions for posting photos on this board

there are none. You must post your pictures on some other place, sorry.

Casey check your PM…Bud

I think you already have my E-Mail address from my Swap

very wise move! i thought i was being my usual Luddite self, computer literacy not being my strong suit. thanks!

thanks, Bud, for the photo help. i’ll try just putting the URLs because when i post the photos as images they come out huge, like billboards. not exactly my style or intention!

The Fish of the Day–second one landed. Caught 7 or 8 of these beautiful British browns–must be the dark stained water that makes them this color.

Fish On–River Wharf above Burnsall bridge. This summer’s floods made fishing an adventure.

River Wharf at Loup Scar. Yorkshire scenery can’t be beat.

River Wharf above Addingham the next day. Most fishing in England is private so you buy a day ticket from the local club that looks after that stretch of the river. Fifteen pounds, but I had it to myself.

Another British brown, all on my own this time.

He and several others came out of this riffle; yes, very high water. The bigger fish were a handful in the deep water so I didn’t get photos.

Your welcome,

Nice Pics had to be a great time.,Bud

Hey Casey,

Just out of curiosity…Did you take your gear with you? or borrow somebody’s once you got there. Was wondering about customs with your flies & stuff…Bud

took it. customs is no problem for decently dressed grey 60-year-olds who walk through the Nothing To Declare line. since it was checked, there was no issue in the security line, either.

FishPond makes a rolling luggage that has a compartment underneath that holds 4 32-inch rod-tubes. expensive. works a treat. held everything for the trip. fit withing airline checked baggage rules. got a little top-heavy when really full, but easily kicked upright when sprinting for the Metro. it’s on the FishPond website.

guide, btw, would have lent me anything i needed, but…we travel a lot and i wanted the bag!

I think you really enjoyed Yorkshire Casey, great pictures.
