I’m going to Yellowstone 9/22/08 for a week of fun. I love fishing there. Each trip has been better than the last. Since I will have the time, I’m looking for suggestions to branch out to the surrounding waters.
I’ll be staying at West Yellowstone and not opposed to driving or hiking to sample new waters. Anyone care to offer some ideas?
I’d suggest stopping in at Blue Ribbon Fly Shop in West Yellowstone and asking them what’s going on and where. They have a “fishing report” posted right as you enter the front door. Also they can tell you what’s hot and what is not.
Send me a PM with a little more detail about how much time you have, how far you are willing to drive and / or hike, and what kind of water you most enjoy fishing, e.g. small streams, medium sized rivers, large rivers, wading or drifting, and what species you would like to target.
Jeff-I have a love/hate relationship with Blue Ribbon Fly Shop. I love going in the shop and hate seeing my bill when I leave with more tying stuff I don’t need but can’t resist. I get their weekly email and dream…
Rex,
I know what you mean. My son and I were in West Yellowstone for 10 days in July. I ran a tab there for the week which I knew would be a dangerous thing. A bunch of tying stuff, a Winston B2T, Rio Gold line, some flies and misc. other stuff I just couldn’t live without put a ding in my bank account for sure.
Problems with the gate on the dam at Hebgen have resulted in raised water flows on the Madison. I don’t know whether this will be fixed by the end of September. You’ll want to get up-to-date info on it if you’re thinking of fishing the lower Madison.
The Yellowstone below Gardner is in excellent shape right now, with heavy Baetis hatches this past week, and the big browns should start whacking streamers by the time you’re here.
I just fished a day on the Yellowstone at Livingston. A 22+ brown and Lots of rainbows and whitefish on drys. The morning was real slow and afternoon/evening was great.
Hurly
Try to make your way to the Idaho side of the divide to Island Park. One of my favorite places is near coffee pot rapids, as you turn off the highway for the rapids drive all the way to where the road ends and park, short hike down to the river, simply a quite secluded canyon beautiful area…
About forty five minutes from West Yellowstone…
Have a wonderful trip…
Steve Molcsan
ps: there is a subway along the highway across from Robins roost gas station & store in IP
you can get a lunch to go , man I wish I was there right now…
Look for a copy of Fly Fishing the Yellowstone River - An Anglers Guide by Rod Walinchus & Tom Travis. Might have more info about Montana & the streams that flow into the Yellowstone, but lots of great ideas on which streams to fish & what flies work.
