Yellowstone caddis and onset of runoff prediction

Here’s what I think based on current snow levels and weather forecasts, and the word from some sports who were in today and pumped a couple fish that were chock full of caddis larvae:

Mother’s Day Caddis: begin in earnest May 5-7.

Runoff: begin in earnest May 12-15.

Trav never makes predictions, but the river right now is 1,000 cfs below normal. That means we need 1,000 to get to normal. He has lived here 37 years. This should be interesting. And for the flatlanders, the Interstate east of Billings at Glendive is closed tonight due to severe blizzard. Opps.

Anyone know snow levels and conditions toward the NE corner of the YNP near Cooke City. I’m heading that way to Camp Host for the FS in 2 1/2 weeks.

Take a look at this.

As of right now, the overall Upper Yellowstone snowpack is 149% of normal, and this includes the guage at the northest entrance which is at a whopping 242%! Better take your snowshoes and a shovel.
