This article was in the local Ellensburg paper two weeks ago. I read it while I was over there doing a float on the Yak. In some ways I am sorry to see articles like this about such a great river because it is only one of a small handful that are decent in our state. That will bring more people, more fishing pressure, but also more money to the area and to the fly shops and guides that make their living on the river.
I guess I should just be glad that the article was a positive one and not a negative one about how the river is failing. That would really be a sad article. Luckily, the Yakima River is maintaining itself nicely despite Mother Nature and mankind.
If you are coming into our great state, arrange a days float on the Yakima River. Good fishing and lots of beauty.

A day or two on the Yak is great way to have fun. I have drifted it before and will do it again. I was however diappointed in all the crap/litter/articles of closing/etc that was all over the river. I don’t mind picking up some junk but the day I fished the Yak, it would fill t he boat. My guide said it is due to the rafters and that the guides will sometimes organize clean up days. So, maybe more fly fishermen - folks who tend to be a little more high class in my mind – might put some pressure on people to clean up their act.
Bottom line, the canyon is beautiful the fishing prettygood and therefore it is well worth going.

Too bad there is so much stuff – however, the good thing is that it is being collected. I suspect most of it comes from college students rafting down the river. I guess what surprises me the most is that I always thought of Washington as a state that is environmentally aware – yet the trash in this river along with all the development going on around Seattle in wet land areas makes me think otherwise.
Also makes me wonder about how well their natural resources are managed.
