Wrap Up, Roscoe NY Fish-In 2005

The evening rise on beautiful Cairns Pool, perhaps
the most heavily fished waters on the Beaverkill.
That’s Robert Montouri (monty) and Allan Podell
(tyeflies) fishing the late afternoon hatch.

The Morning Meeting Place

Every morning most of us had breakfast at the Roscoe
diner. Mike Stweard of Gramby, CT., joined us for
most of the week. He is former president of the
Northeast Council of the Fly Fishing Federation.

Les Young of Philly (left) is a fixture at the
annual fish-ins with his talk of fine rods and
reels. Les is generally top rod at these
get-togethers, and Monty is listening intently.

The Canadian contingent was well represented by Peter
and Andrew of Kingston, Ontario (left) and Lauder of
Newburg, Ontario (foreground). Art Williams (atwo)
from Andover, Mass. Joins them here for for breakfast.

Charlie Place, of Windsor Locks, CT., (left) and
Ray DuBois are breakfast regulars at the fish-in.
Charlie is a prominent New England outdoor writer
and Ray held the fly casting clinic at the Catskill
Fly Fishing Center and Museum for FAOL member
attending the fish-In.

Allan Podell (organizer of the fish-in) was presented
an old map of the Beaverkill River Valley by Mike and
Margaret Merigliano at the last days breakfast.

The Fishing

We had beautiful weather every day of the fish-in.
This is part of the gang on Neversink Day at
Bridgeville getting ready to tackle the river.
In the back from left is Mike (ny angler),
Steve Sedler and Monty. Front: lou t, RW
and Allan.

Monty releases a nice brown after getting into
an evening hatch of yellow stone flies and rising
trout at the famous Beaverkill Covered Bridge
Pool.

Mike (ny anglers), RW and Monty get ready to head
for the Campground pool for the evening hatch.
We used Allan’s campsite as homebase for this
section of the Beaverkill.

Ray DuBois lays out one of his patented long,
smooth casts to a finisky brown trout that has
been sipping Green Drakes in Cairns Pool.

Monty puts the butt to a nice brown trout on
the upper Willowemoc.

RW’s 1-weight strikes again. This beautifully
marked 14-inch brown was taken on his ‘go-to’ fly,
a Dark Cahill wet on the upper Willowemoc.

Caught red-handed! Allan Podell, (formerly tyeflies)
comes out of the closet. Posing with his dog “Bear,”
Podell was officially renamed “ZEBCO” after being
caught by fellow FAOL’rs with a spinning rod and
bobber.

Allan quickly came to his senses, donned his
waders, grabbed a fly rod and took off for the
stream before the ribbing became too intense.

Allan casts to a nice stretch of water on the
Willowemoc River in front of the Catskill Fly
Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor.

The Cookout

Here’s most of the FAOL gang chowing down during
the cookout at Allan’s campsite on Thursday.
That’s lou t and Art Williams (left foreground)
and Ed Temme (Smernsky) and his friend John from
Pennsylvania (right foreground.)

About 18 folks attended the feast. Allan
did chef’s duties.

More cookout.

Lou t won the cookout raffle, a Cortland
fly line.

The Tying

Every night the owner of the Ryenolds House let us
use the lounge at his motel so the group could tie
flies. Our thanks to Dex for his generous offer.
Lou t and his friend Steve came all the way from
Maryland to attend the 3rd Annual Roscoe fish-In.
He hasn’t missed one yet.

Here’s Mike (ny angler) tying up more flies for the
next days fishing. Mike took 14 browns from the
Beaverkill covered bridge pool one evening on
stoneflies.

Jason Schnurr (Feenom) made the tying sessions at
Reynold House Lounge every night.

Allan (tyeflies) puts the finishing touches
on one of his favorite patterns, the coffin
fly.

RW took time out from his fishing to visit
Ralph Graves and buy his new DVD. Ralph was
tying at the Clearwater Junction fly tying
event in Livingston Monor, put on by the
Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers to raise money
for conservation projects. Ralph is a master
fly tyer, well know for tying classic wet
fly patterns.

The Casting Clinic

The long awaited Fly Casting Clinic, put on by
Ray DuBois was held on Friday afternoon on the
grounds of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and
Museum. Here starts the group off by letting
them cast to loosen up a little.

Ray also made it a point to spend some time
with each individual participant. Here he is
giving Monty a few pointers.

Here’s Bob Pace (Sawkill) getting a little
personal attention.

Here’s Ray really emphasizing a point on
casting to Jason (feenon).

Lou t gets a little hands-on help.

Ray “did not” teach ny anglers to cast up a
tree, but he did anyway. Charlie is supervising
the removal.

Scott, one of FAOL’s newer members, watches the
casting demo and picks up pointers from the
comfort of a shade tree.

Here Ray demonstrates the single haul and
the double haul

He concludes the clinic by showing the group
a little power casting. Our thanks to Ray
for giving up his fishing time to help out
fellow FAOL members.

The Farewell Dinner

The farewell dinner at the Rockland House was
well attended. Talk of the week’s events and
plans for next year’s fish-in were the main
topics of conversation.

Monty was given the newly instituted Chub
Slinger Award
by Mike (ny angler) for
catching the largest fish of the week, a 19-inch
brown trout from Cairn’s pool! Oh! And les
caught a 19-inch sucker on a dry fly. Will
wonders never cease?

Hope to see you all at the 4th Annual Roscoe
Fish-In next year…same time, same station.
Have a good rest of the season. ~ RW
