wow thats small

I just got finished tyin up a bunch of big ‘ol 1/0 steelhead flies for the geography swap,
and now I’m doin a dozen or so #18 scuds…They’re lookin’ way small, might be I gotta get me a fly tyin microscope:roll: …ModocDan

If you have buddy that works at a medical Lab or tech shop, get a used magnifying lamp they are great, or you could just get a small one from wall-y- world

Modocdan, wait until you have to hold that 1/0 at arms length to see it.

I got a magnifying/lamp at Bass Pro Shop for $19.99 it sure helps these old eys of mine see. Not that it helps my flies look any better but at least I can see them. I am new to tying so that part of it is lack of skill. LOL

Well, Modocdan… when your tying table gets to the point, like mine… then you KNOW your eyes are going south on you!
(My magnifier lamp, is just off to the side of the picture!)

Hi Dan,

After tying small flies for a while that take just a tiny bit of material, I look at the larger hooks and feel like I’m trying to gift wrap an Abrams Tank. Each fly seems to use up half a package of this, most of what I have left of that and all of something else. It’s really difficult for me to go from very large to very small flies or very small to very large flies. 8T

Dan,
You’d oughta have the Flygoddess post you up some pic of the size 32 flies she ties at the Expo demonstrations. They aren’t a gimmick either, they are effective trout-getters. Chime in Joni!

I was in a mixed fly swap once, in which everyone tied their favorite fly. When I recieved the flies, I though I had been shorted three flies. After a close inspection, I found three flies imbedded in the tail of a big EP Mullet.

SIZE 32   They’d get stuck in the cracks on my calloused fingers !
I think if I get adjusted to 20’s I’ll be proud…ModocDan

Flybinder, You’re tying table is fabulous! Just curious though, Wehre do you put the flies when you get 'em tied??

I’m with you pard. If ya’s can’t see 'em, ya’s can’t fish 'em!

I have a couple # 28’s and a 32 tied by Fly goddess, Let me tell you they are TINY And I have youngster eyes.

The most frustrating day I have ever spent FFing was early in my experiences. The local fly shop had recommended #18 ants and beetles, both dries, so I bought a couple of each. The ant had a white tip indicator and the beetle had an orange back, but once I cast them, I couldn’t see them. They were the right flies, fish were banging them on every cast. Unfortunately, I was never looking at the right spot. These days I don’t fish or tie anything smaller than a #14 Griffith’s Gnat and that with a flo pink tip for hi-vis. Half the time, I still don’t see it. As Miss Bette Davis said - “Gettin’ old ain’t for sissies!”
