I have been reading comments on furled leaders at FAOL for a couple of years now and finally went out and bought one. To say the least, I’m impressed. The experience was everything it was advertised to be. It turns the fly over very easily, goes into and out of water very easily and quietly, and has great strength. Even throwing the “chuck and duck” big weighted flies for smallies was much easier. I used to hand tie my own tapered down leaders (20 + years) but that is now a thing of the past. I know I won’t go through the effort of creating my own furled leaders…it looks to be way more than I care to do…I’ll use that time to continue my fly tying. For those who haven’t tried a furled leader you are missing out. I wish I had switched over 2 years ago when I first started reading about them. Thanks FAOL I’m out here on my own and don’t even know another fly fisherman in the area. If I hadn’t read about it on the bulletin board I would have never tried it.
Sound’s like me when I first discovered furled leader’s , they can not be beat. Only under few situation’s do I use anything else.
Jim,
I’m just a “bit” south of you in Kansas City! I think furling my own leaders is MUCH easier than tying tapered leaders … by a long shot!! If you don’t mind spending the big bucks on buying your furled leaders, OK. But when that gets tedious, let me know, I’ll send you some! Along with the directions to furl your own!
Betty
Having fished Betty’s furled leaders, I’d say take her up on that offer! They really are a lot easier than they look.
Never tried tying my own furled leaders, but I purchased a couple last year, and I’m still using the same ones. They’re very reasonably priced as far as store bought furled leaders go, and last for ever.

another vote for Stream Side. Great product, heck of a selection. Just tell him what you want, how you fish, etc.
I’m gonna have to check those Stream Side leaders out! That’s cheap, and they look well-made.
I bought 2 of them early last year and still use both of them on my 3 & 5wt rods. Just clean them up like you would your fly line and they will last a long time.
Mike
I like the looks of those streamside leaders…especially the power pro for salt.
I have one on an 9wt line I overlined for an 8wt rod. It turns over large bass flies quite nicely.
I’ve seen the Kathy Scott DVD on how to make your own leaders and jig that was reviewed on this site by JC I believe. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/prorevw/kathyscott.php
The process does look relatively simple. I’ve been trying to get in touch with an online buddy (Don) who makes his own leaders with this jig. Don if you’re outthere, pipe up will you?
Jim;
I get worried when I have less than 50 furled leaders on hand! I give a lot away and plan to trade them for fly’s at the Idaho Fish-In.
7’ & 5’ 6/0 Uni for dries, flourocarbon for wets, mono to go both ways and Gutterman Tera 10 thread for wets or dries.

Some where in the back pages of this forum I posted the dim. for a board and the lay up pattern for the leaders made by Kat.
I have been using 7.5 ft leaders for my 7-ft 3-wt… What length furled leader would you recommend?
quivirakid
5’ Leaders. Do you fish dry’s or wets?
Hey Jack
That’s Tera 180…not 10. Someone hast to keep you in line…it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it!

Don’t know of one, but why not order Kathy Scott’s DVD? She’s good folk, and it’s a detailed video.
