worms in the water

When I was out Friday night I noticed hundreds of worms in the water. Caterpiller types without the fuzz. A dark green with black stripes. I was doing well with a Jitterbee for bluegill, and a small Clouser brought me a decent 2 lb. bass. Looking through my box I found a Green Meanie (I think that’s the right name) and tied it on. On my first cast it was absolutely hammered by a large bluegill. Rarely do I remember a hit like that. I thought I was in heaven . . . and didn’t catch another one. Seeing the worms was interesting. Sounds like the pine sawfly caterpillar. My Scotch and Jack pines are full of them now. Light green to dark green and can strip a branch over night. They live in colonies of a couple hundred and can be killed manually. Beware they are proof positive of you are what you eat (pine scented innards).Pretty gross.
