Wool Muddler heads

When using ram’s wool for Muddler heads what is the more common way to form the head. I’ve tried two methods. 1. Stretch out tufts of wool, wind them :?: directly on the hook while twisting it on the thread as a dubbing technique and rough up the surface of the head when finished. or 2. Cut the wool into short pieces, apply with a dubbing loop technique and trim to shape with scissors.

I usually spin wool just as I would deer hair. It spins in a very similar manner, but doesn’t flare as much. I pack it, then trim it to shape.

Ray,

Couldn’t be easier. Take a chunk of rams wool, lay it on the hook shank, take several very tight wraps in the center, repeat with more chunks as needed. Tie off and trim to shape. Just like stacking deer hair.

Ray,

I also ‘spin’ wool just like deer hair. I think that this enhances the absorption rate, makeing the fly sink quicker. It’s certainly faster than using a dubbing loop.

Good Luck!
