Winter Tying Season

Seems like winter is coming on sooner this year than most. So I’m doing an upgrade on my tying bench. I removed the sliding doors from a small closet and put a table in there with lots of light. I also put a medium sized wall mirror behind the table. I noticed right off the bat that it creates more light. I can also see the back side of my flies when using a non-rotary vise. Has anyone tried using a mirror as a backdrop before? How did it work for you?

Lotech,

Nice setup. My only problem with having a mirror like that is that I would have to look at the tyer the whole time I was tying.

I have used the small mirror that mounts to the vise, but since I started tying with the Nor-Vise there is no need for it. It would add to the light on your fly.

Have a fun winter tying over there. See you at the Fly Fishing Fair in Ellensburg on April 30 & May 1?

I bought a cheap magnifying make-up mirror to put behind my vise. this let me see the back of the fly clearly and helped eliminate gaps in dubbed bodies and uneven ribbing. I still have it but it is pretty dusty nowadays.

I don’t know about mirrors. Probably would bother me. I’d suggest a solid background.
However, you should send me that hide as it probably has bugs that will infect your material…
