winter tying season coming to an end

It’s almost time to start thinking more about fishing than tying. Did you tie anything new or interesting? Does anyone have any ideas they tried this year to share? As for me, I didn’t tie as much as in years past since my fly boxes were still full from last winter. I hope to fish a lot more this year. The only new idea I tried other than playing with craft fur I already posted about was to replace the legs on some foam beetles with black flashabou that was sitting on the table. I won’t know for a while if it helps.

Playing with EP Wooly Critter brushes. Found a pink marker to replace the brown, just haven’t tied them up, yet.

I had to wait for my tax refund so I could buy materials for all the new patterns I wanted to tie. I was off all of Feb., but couldn’t do much tying. Now, I’ve bought about $600 worth of stuff to tie with, but I’m back to work, so I don’t have much time. Go figure…

Stuff I want to do:
Intruders
Slumpbusters
Bunny Midges
a nice Carnage-style Hex pattern, maybe a parachute?
Megalolipop
Magneto Stones and Magneto Danceclub
Egg Sucking Leeches
Cheech Leeches
Drunk and Disorderly
Mini-D (smaller version of the Drunk and Disorderly)
Royal Wulff
Royal Coachman wets (still need some red floss)
Forget-me-knot Midge
Snot Goblins
Huevo Frito alevin

And others…

One NEVER stops tying…

PT/TB

i was going to say one never stops fishing

I fish year round (although not much when its really cold) and have embraced a “just in time” tying strategy. So rather then tying in large volume over the winter, I tie year round and as needed to fill my boxes and be ready for my next trip. That means that I’ve been tying a lot of Baetis nymphs lately as that’s the fly I’ve been fishing.

I’ve been incorporating more of euro nymphing concepts into my fishing, so I did spend some time lately putting together an “anchor fly” box. These are all larger, heavy nymphs with tungsten beads and in some cases additional non-toxic wire wraps. Rubber Legged Stones, Sexy Walts, Perdigons, San Juan Worms, Mops, etc. Designed to get down without additional weight on the tippet.
