Winnie's Fore-and-Aft SBS

Art Winnie’s Michigan hexagenia pattern from the 20’s. I beefed up the tail a bit to give it a bit more buoyancy - the original pattern was tied with 3 bucktail fibers.

hook - TMC 5212 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - moose body hair
rear hackle - brown
rib - small tinsel gold
body - Congo Hair gold
front hackle - brown
wing - duck quill segment

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, wrap to bend

clean, stack, measure (hook length) some moose body; tie in/trim

tie in hackle, wrap to hook point; tie off/trim

tie in tinsel

move thread to 2/3 mark, tie in CH; wrap to rear hackle and back, tie off/trim

spiral rib; tie off/trim

Part 2

tie in front hackle; wrap to 1 eye width back from eye, tie off/trim

prep matching duck quill segments (gap width); tie in with pinch wrap

trim butts, whip finish, SHHAN

Probably unnecessary – the rear hackle will take care of that. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the original intent of the rear hackle was allow the fly to have exactly three fibers in the tail, the same as the natural. The tail will never touch the water.

Anyway, I’m a sucker for fore-and-aft flies, and this looks like good one. (I’d probably use yellow or tan thread to keep the fly lighter in color, though)

A different take using a chuckar back feather; creates a thinner profile on the wing.

trim out center

measure for length, fold, pinch-wrap, tie in

trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Scott
