A buddy and I headed out to Lake Manatee today to fly fish on a windy day. I picked a new launch near the bridge at Verna-Bethany Road. Figured we could paddle up the river if it got too windy. Near our launch site, I caught three nice bass and a few big bluegill on poppers before the wind picked up. We headed up the river and did fair. We caught some big bluegill, a large stumpknocker and a shiner – mostly on nymphs.
Not a bad day, considering the wind.
Steve, that 2nd picture appears to be a nice-sized Spotted Sunfish. Very cool!!
Yes, indeed, Dave. Down here, we call them stumpknocker!
Ah, cool! I just learned something new! I’ll add that to my U.S. freshwater fish species name conversion table:
Speckled Perch = Crappie = Sac-a-lait
Bream = Sunnies = general term for any sunfish species
Shellcracker = Redear Sunfish
Stumpknocker = Spotted Sunfish
Sand Bass = White Bass
Sunnies = any sunfish species in MN
Wipers = Hybrid Striped Bass
Freshwater Drum = Sheephead
White Amur = Grass Carp
Dogfish = Bowfin = Mudfish
Eelpout = Burbot
I bet there’s more! What am I still missing? ;o)
You can add a few:
Bowfin = dogfish and mudfish
Freshwater drum is NOT a sheepshead, but a sheephead
Bream is a collective noun for all panfish; not just bluegill
ok thanks! I updated the list above.
That’s a really cool photo of the Golden Shiner, Steve!
White perch=*##!!**
In Tennessee, Black Perch equals a Rock Bass.

Pickerel in the US is usually a chain pickerel. In Ontario they’re walleye.
I’ve heard both crappie and brook trout called Specks.
Rock Bass called Red Eyes
Great day on the water. Thank for sharing!
Another name for bowfin is grinnel.
Female bluegill are sometimes called yellow perch in the South.

So, what are walleye called in Ontario?

Motivating me to try to beat the wind this weekend
