Willow Special

Would someone please post a picture or link of a “Willow Special” dun pattern.

Thanks

Byron,
Probably not what you’re looking for, but “Fly Patterns” by Taff Price has a Willow Fly that’s a dun colored caddis dry. Body is a palmered dun hackle, wing is a dun feather tied wonder wing style, another dun hackle wrapped in front of the wing. Methinks you might be looking for a mayfly dun?

I’m under the impression that willow flies generally refer to stone flies. However, I think willow fly refers to to mayflies in some areas of the south.

Try googling Willow Fly Emerger.

Guys,
I am looking for a pattern called the Willow Special…

Im guessing it might be a down-wing pattern, but not sure.

Byron, Check into Charles Meck’s “The Hatches Made Simple.” According to the PAflyfishing it’s probably in the book, which is available on Amazon for $4.10.

Jesse,
That is where the pattern is referenced and is why I am asking. The book is a wonderful book and suggests the pattern’s use, but does not show a picture of the fly…that I can find.

Recent post about Meck’s book:

Probably not the fly you are looking for, but there is a Willow Special listed in “Perrault’s Standard Dictionary of Fishing Flies”.

Tail: Black H.F. (hackle fibers)
Body: Dark red floss
Hackle: Black
Wing: Hen Pheasant W.F. sections

Is there a picture you could post?
I want to see what the pattern looks like.
Thanks

Here is one of the several references in Meck’s book to the Willow Special

Why don’t you write Meck? Or is he no longer with us?

I wrote him last week. Email goes to the web admin. Haven’t heard back. Not sure he is with us (I think he is), and not sure he will get my question.
Good idea, though.

Unfortunately there are no pictures in my book.

Charlie has a Facebook page that lists his gmail address. He may monitor that inbox.

You could also try the paflyfish.com forum. It’s pretty active, and there may be someone with local knowledge of the willow special.

He hasn’t updated it in a couple of years.

He is having some medical issues. He is living in New York,I believe.
