Bought this vest used and I don’t have the slighest idea on how to load the tippet into the dispenser. I’m assuming several spools can fit in the pocket and you feed the tippet through, somehow. Thanks for any replies.
Do you have the full vest or chest pack??
Dear gqualls,
I have a chest pack by William Joseph and it has the same system as the vest. You put the tippet spools in the pouch pocket and string the tippet through the slots across the top. There are five slots on my pack. For trout I carry 2X through 6X so it holds what I need. Once you do that you simply string all the tippet ends through the one tab in the center. I’ve set mine up but haven’t actually used it on the stream yet. I see that for 2007 the tippet dispenser system is gone, that isn’t a good sign!
Best Wishes,
Avalon
there is actually a hole at one end of the slot, thread the tippet through the hole then slide to the other end of the slot to hold it in place
Crotalus and Avalon’s instructions for usage are correct. I’ve found this to be one of the least desirable features on the WJ equipment. With the single location for stringing the tippets together every time you want some of one size you end up pulling all the other loose too. I still store the spools in the pouch but when I need one I end up just unzipping it and pulling out the size I want.
I can understand why they quit that system. It was a great idea that just didn’t work out in the field. I still like the pack and many of the other features. I just don’t think the tippet dispenser is very functional.
I like mine just fine. The ends of the tippets do come out of the center slot, but I manage to find the ends when I need them and still leave the spools in the pocket.
Thanks everyone. Upon closer inspection, and with the aid of my magnifiers, I now see the small slots to feed to tippet through. Thanks again.
Sorry, as they are not a sponsor on here, I can’t be of any help.
I usually end up forgetting which is which and have to open the pouch to see which tag i need to pull on.
I really like my Gear Bag Chest but since they introduced the new Confluence i am kinda wishing i would have waited.
I have the Fusion vest. I don’t think the holes in front are for tippets. I believe they’re for more zingers. The tippet pockets are on the inside of the vest.
I could be wrong, but I can’t believe WJ would have made it that hard to use those holes for tippet.
I used the tippet dispensers on WJ products for a couple of years…as intended. It works fine once you figure it out and so long as you don’t keep more than 3 spools of tippet in there at a time. It has slots for 5. With 5, the spools hang up too often, not allowing the smooth dispensing of tippet. BUT…it has to be reloaded when a spool runs dry.
SO…awhile back, I just quit bothering with it and use the dispenser to store spools of tippet. I just zip it open and pull out what I need when I want tippet now.
I agree that it was a great idea and innovative design that just wasn’t quite effective enough in the field to survive. It is going away on their newest models of things.
Silvermallard,
I learned exactly what you are talking about this past weekend. I agree that the best thing to do is to use the pocket for storage.
