Will this work for a Mayfly????

Hi,

Thinking of trying this as a Mayfly. What do you think?

Or stick with the 'ol patterns?

Byron,

You won’t know til you let him out of his box, lol.

Allan

I’m sure it will catch fish. But if you do catch a fish, how will you know the fish thought it was a mayfly?
:=))

If it is used and taken during rises to a PMD hatch, I would mark it down as a Mayfly take - especially if not a splashy rise.

That works. Makes good sense too. My experiment for this summer will be to fish a (small) Royal Wulff during a PMD hatch. I know the big ones don’t work at all. Probably at a Paradise Valley Spring Creek…if and when I get last-minute rod cancellation. A friend of mine swears tiny #18 Royal Wulffs (if you can get them) work just fine during Trico time on the Missouri. If #18 Royal Wulffs work during a PMD hatch it would be innersting. Unanswered questions are (still) the most fun.

Very interesting. My fishing buddy who gets to fish the Harriman Ranch a great deal more than I do swears by the “Strawberry Shortcake”. He uses the smallest Royal Wulf he can find and catches some really nice trout on them! Who knows what that fly is taken for…

Your 1st two pic more like a caddis imitation , the the third for sure a sulfur may…

Steve,
Thanks for that. It is just that I think the first 2 pics might represent a cross-over between a caddis and a mayfly. I was talking to Hans Weilenmann (creator of the CDC/Elk) and he suggested that his pattern often works during a Mayfly hatch…

Byron I think you are on the right lines. Fish it during a hatch, If it is taken look closely at the rise form. If it is the same as the rise to the natural then you have hit the triggers that the fish are using to identify the naturals as food.

Some years ago I came up with a variant of the CdC and Elk with a wing like a Comapra Dun and the usual body. Tie the wing in first forward over the eye, wind the body and use the stem of the CdC to post the wing. It has worked well in all kinds of hatch, Just match size and colour. When I get back from work I’ll post a photo for you. (Its 04:30 here, bit early for me to get my fingers working).

Cheers,
A.

Just a bit if a traditionalist here, certain shapes just mmic certain hatches.
Bread will catch trout…

for a fair crossover fly I think a hemmingway caddis would mmic small mayflies…
If I remember correctly, it was misnamed , go figure that tiers thinking…

Be safe

As promised previously.
CdC And Elk Upright
(I forgot to mention, I usually put a few soft feather barbs in for a tail.)

You can tie it in any colour or size you like.

I use CDC as part of my wing in this pattern. It gives the wing the color I want.
