Baby Dolls & Furled Mohair Leeches.

I am sure those flies wil catch crappie. The baby dolls look like bait fish/ minnows, the crappies favorite food. One of my all time best producers for crappie is a size 10 Hares Ear.

I agree…those are some crappy flies…I mean, those will catch crappies.
One of my best crappie flies in eastern WA in late spring has been a size 10 damsel nymph. Fished slowly on a sinking line over rocky structure, with short twitches followed by pauses. Deadly, at least in a couple of lakes where I hit it right.
Where I fish they will. Bluegill and bass too. And trout on the leeches. They all look good.
Joe, bring them to CWFI and find out!

when I was a kid we use to catch crappie all day long on jigs that looked a lot like those baby dolls. Good job! I’m sure they’ll work great.

I know the furl tailed leeches will. Short ug and thyen let them slide a little and pause.

They will only work if fished wet. As a dry fly they are not good. I’m thinking crappie, bream, bass, maybe carp will go for those.
I’d throw a bead on some of those leeches, and tie some of the Dolls with some PINK! Think electric chicken…

Joe they sure will! Crappies feeding along the surface will also take wet/emerger flies. If you are going for crappie there is a fly that Al Campbell tied that is a must have in the fly box:

Vary the color on the crappie candy so you have some light, some medium and dark shades. I also vary the sizes from 8-14. This fly is deadly to anything that swims and eats minnows! It is a go to fly that occupies a top position in my fly box. I tied some with blood red marabou that the fish just crush.

Um…Steve We don’t normally fish any lakes or streams at the CWFI that have Crappie. Unless you mean the giggle fish at Stan Coffin which would gulp down those flies of Joe’s by the ton.
The nearest good Crappie lake I can think of would be Moses Lake. Plus I have caught lots of Crappie in the potholes reservoir just south of town. Of course that was the olden days before fly fishing when I used live wasp maggots for bait.

I have to 2nd Nighthawk suggestion. The crappie candy fly is probably one of the most productive crappie flies I’ve used and it will bring in the smallies too. It’s a easy tie and very productive. Never heard of this Baby Doll pattern before but may have to give it a try.
