Normal stuff: toe tag with handle/name, recipe, crush proof box with appropriate postage and the like. Deadline for receiving the flies is October 27 – My birthday!!! So, bring 'em on!
Well, I have read the thread in the warm water section. I am really curious about this post and I think it looks pretty challenging. I would love to join but have not seen any patterns to tie from, any suggestions?
Remember the old Flat Fish or Lazy Ike plugs for bass? Think of tying a fly from foam using that same concept. IOW, a long, flat lip that causes your fly to “wiggle” under water. People had impregnated split shot on the sides to get them to sink to imitate a crawfish. You can put a piece of cream plastic as a tail. Whatever. Basically you tie a fly then secure a piece of foam over the top. There is a photo showing the concept. And this is all this is – a concept fly. The floaters sit like a popper until you strip the fly, then it snakes underwater and wobbles or wiggles like crazy. Drives bass and other things crazy. When you stop the strip, it floats back to the surface. You can do frog imitations. Use zonkers or plastic strips as a tail. Whatever. This isn’t a trout swap, meaning you can pretty much do whatever you please. You don’t have to match no nothing. JGW
It really is more of a concept fly than a pattern. Do em in any size, color and configuration that works. That’s why I’m having diffulty pinning down which one I want to contribute to the swap.
These flies aren’t that difficult to tie, but they are somewhat technical in that the hook eye needs to come straight through the foam of they plane to one size or the other…
Sorry. Can’t speak much for trout. I sort of always seen it as a warmwater fly, but hey, if trout love 'em got for it. Makes for fewer flies to carry. G JGW
I got the idea shortly after I fished my first one…got to thinking that the trout in the fly fishing only stretches probably never saw such a thing and that it would drive them crazy. Turns out they were fans of it as well, thought I manage to catch a 15" smallie where I usually catch trout. Bonus!
Wecome Gardenfish. Don’t worry about the small stuff. We’re talking about a concept fly so the concept is what’s important, not the name. Come on, lurkers, join in on the fun. A little foam won’t kill ya! JGW
Ok I’m in w/ a red & white wiggle bug. I’m tying these for the pike fly swap anyway and I thought I would get double mileage out of it on this swap. Pike is what I use them for so they will be big.
Ron Mason is in. Glad to have you aboard and look forward to seeing our big pike fly, and fishing it too. Need one more to make this official, sort of like baseball – got to have those 5 innings and the lead to earn any credit! JGW
Ok, ive been lurking in the shadows checking out this site. I came across this swap, checked out the wiggle bug and had to try it on my gills… well it worked!!! I laughed at the action of this thing, the people watching me must have thought i lost my mind, but i cought a fish every cast… im pretty much a beginner, been tying poppers for my gills, but thats about it. so if you will have me, im in!!! mine will be panfish size, as thats what i fish for 99% of the time… im now a foam junkie!!! lol.
