Why would anyone hire a guide?

…I’ll tell you why…

Monday night, my good friend, Wade, and I went down to Branson to fish Taneycomo for the day yesterday. We checked into our hotel, and decided to head down to the dam to see what the water flow was like.

High, high all the way up to the fourth step on outlet two. There was only one other car there when we pulled in, with a sticker on the back and side windows that read, “Tanycomo Nights, guide service.”

The guide was just finnishing rigging up. I introduced myself, and Wade, and he introduced himself. After some idle chit-chat about how high the water was and how hard the wind was blowing, he said, “High water, high wind, no problem.”

I didn’t have much confidence in the situation, but we thought why not, we were there to fish, so we might as well wet our lines. The guide was kind enough to show us how he was rigging up, neither Wade, or I had anything like he was using, (he even gave us a few flies) so we did our own thing, even after the guide offered to rig us up. An hour later, after beating the water to a froth with nary a fish to either’s credit, we both decided to go back to outlet two to see how our new found friend was faring…fish after fish we watched him bring in. That was all it took…, “Here, let me show you how to rig up for night fishing,” he said.

We all headed up to the shelter where there was light, he worked his magic, and when we were both ready, he took us down to the outlet, and showed us how to fish the rig he’d just tied up for us. Oh, he showed us pictures of MONSTER brown trout he’d caught over the past few days, all of them at night, hence the name of his guide service, Taneycomo Nights.

It was only seconds before I had the first fish of the night on, and then another, and another, and another. The same for Wade.

That my friends is why someone would hire a guide. He turned a potentially uneventful trip into one I won’t ever forget…for good reasons.

Our guide for the night was none other than our very own NightAngler from here on FAOL.

If you’re heading down to Taneycomo to chase some of the big browns that swim there, give him a call, or check out his website, Taneycomonights.com. It’ll be worth every red cent.

All the best, and tight lines,

Thunderthumbs.

Great post, AND it speaks so well of the people here on FAOL being willing to help others without asking anything in return (Night Angler). If the wallet can bear the price, a good guide will shorten the learning curve significantly, and turn your trip into one that will be remembered for years to come.

Sounds incredible. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone offered up that kind of info and direction without asking $ for it? I’d imagine other guides would have said watch this, caught fish after fish and then handed you a business card instead of flies. Good on ya NA-1

Some places have only limited public access. If you are visiting an area and you don’t know where these are or know how to avoid crowds of people, having a local guide(or a local person…if you can find one) would be indispensible.

thunderthumbs…

Hey bud…

I had a great time…
It was good to meet you (putting a name to a face), enjoyed to chat with you and Wade both…

BTW… how did you guys do the next day??

when I got home I checked the weather… the wind was blowing 25-30mph… with gust up to 45… I thought I felt a “draft” every now and then…LOL

All in all It was a good night…

Leonard

We did pretty well considering the conditions. I managed to land three or four 18-20 inch rainbows, with a few smaller browns thrown in the mix. Nothing like the pictures you showed us though, but it was still fun.

Thank you so much for all your help, I hope I can return the favor some day,

TT

This thread just shows, once again, the CLASS folks here at FAOL! Some day I WILL fish down there! When I do Leonard, you will hear from me.
Thanks for sharing & kudos to Leonard.
