I have read a few threads on wood strip rods. I have never built a rod so forgive my ignorance. Is the strip wood like a bamboo in that each rod section is constructed from 6 pieces that have equilateral triangle cross-sections? If so, why glue together 6 strips instead of using a tapered single piece for each section?
It all goes back to how a piece of laminate can be stronger structurally. The fibers of each individual section are different and putting them together makes them work against each other for that structural strength.
A single piece has all its fibers running in concert with each other and this makes it very weak structurally.
Duh. It makes sense, thanks.
Can someone please direct me to a book or instruction for making a wood strip rod, other than boo…
Sounds like a fun project…

I just ordered Making Strip-Built Fly Rods from Various Woods on a Lathe by John Betts a couple of days ago. Once I get it and look it over I’ll let you know my impressions. Making a strip built fly rod is on my short list of things to do.
Thanks!

I have a copy of the original book when Mr. Betts was self publishing it (Pre Frank Amato). It is really cool! I “reviewed” it in another thread on the FAOL rod building board. It is still on the first page of threads under this board. Check it out there. I will try the link here:
