Why do Fisherman Exaggerate?

RW mentioned something that I was trying to explain to my wife the other day: why some fish are measured in inches and others in pounds.

If I do measure a bass and describe it to another bass fisherman in inches they look at me funny. The good thing is they will always describe my “inches” bass in a weight that far exceeds what I suspected the fish weighed in the first place.

It’s sort of like getting another fisherman to do your “exaggerating” for you and that confirmation makes it official!

Bam, …

We mesure the summer run of trout here in pounds cause a 20 inch trout will lose over 2-3 lbs of fat over the summer (anadromous and they don’t eat all summer long), … whereas the fall run of trout are juveniles and DO eat, but are smaller.

I like having tape marks on the rods and net … keeps ya honest (and legal …+25 inches Salmon and it MUST go back)

Sorry guys down here we do not measure in inches or lbs. It is bait if it is in inches, and if it is in pounds well it is usually cleaned and ready to cook.

I am of the same feelings as D. Micus, why should we exaggerate. If it is going to be a fish tale then lie. If you had a witness then see what he/she calls it. Oh yea another reason we do not use pounds too much as if someone mentions 20 lbs it is usually the leader or bit tippet.
Pirates have enough on their mind without all the techy stuff.

Catch any?
yup!

Right Dude?

Harold,

I’m with you on that, …

Warden: “Ya have fun?”
Me: “yup”

There was a fellow here that made a great impression with the Florida Marine patrol.
The seized his boat for some reason, and he blew up 2 of theirs. Now that was a few decades back, and the Marine patrol has not quite been the same since. Oh yea the fellow that made things go boom, I think he is still in the care of the state.

He did a lot for the Marine Patrol, now there are about 5 times as many and they have really nice boats.

Personally I like seeing them on the water. I follow them, they know all the short safe cuts. hehehehehe

Why do fishermen exaggerate?

Because if you lie 100% of the time, people start to get suspicious.

When asked how big the fish was. I replyed “I am not sure but when he jumped he cast a shadow over the scale and it weighted 6 pounds”

Or, to paraphrase Mark Twain: The truth is a rare commodity, we must use it sparingly.

LIVE TO FISH, FISH TO BE ALIVE.

What? ME?..Exaggerate???..Heck no, I’m a good ol’ honest Irishman!
BTW, did you folks see the picture of my “Saltwater Bluegill Special” chestpack on the soundoff forum? It’ll PROVE we Midwesterners definitely do NOT exaggerate! It’s on the Cabela’s…post. Now THAT was a solid, common sense, conservative purchase! I WILL, however, need to slightly alter my casts.
Mike

This site’s about sharing!

Saw that Mike and it looked like there were a few snagged Blue gills in the bottom…No wonder you all look so happy in the pics!

Because it just gets better and better with the retelling.

With catch and release, we get to claim the size of the fish that we estimate it should have grown to at the time of the telling, adjusted by our storytelling multiplier…

I’m gonna write that one down Ed…LOL.

I never exaggerate, its the people I tell that impliment the hyperbole.

Philip

RW here,

Unlike Micus, I never told a lie in my life. I thought I did once, but I was wrong.

“We fish for pleasure; I for mine, you for yours.” -James Leisenring on fishing the wet fly-

Statistics have shown that 74 percent of people who quote statistics have just made them up .

Ps. I just made that up .

mantis,

Just to set the record straight, as far as fishing goes: I don’t.

Allan

Well Mantis,

As to fishermens exagerations, I only
trust me and you, and particularly me.G
Sure, I may exagerate too, but I know the
exageration factor in my claims. Of yours,
I havn’t a clue.G Warm regards, Jim

Gierach also rationalizes something along the lines of adding an additional couple inches to a fish size because the listener is automatically going to subtract a couple inches in his head knowing that he is a fisherman.

As the great Obi-Wan once told Luke, "you will soon learn that many truths depend on a certain point of view.
Example: the difference between absolute temperature and the perceived temperature.
Which reminds me of a huge 3 kilo (6 pound) brown I once caught that weighed in at a solid 1.5 kilos.
Did I embellish? No, I just flat out lied.
