those our some big bluegills! I bet they fight like a champ!
I fish a 2wt, 6’ rod quite frequently. It is an Orvis Trout Bum.
I absolutely love it. It is my ‘go to’ rod for many situations. It seems tailor made for the small wooded trout streams I fish most often.
You mentioned making a 6 1/2 footer. I actually think if mine were just those 6inches longer I would NOT like it as much. You’d be surprised how the short length makes it easier to cast under branches and within the tight confines of a small stream. I also have a 6’ Fenwick with a 5wght line and find the same thing to be true.
I wouldn’t use this rod on open water even for pan fishing. I am happier with rods that can throw more weight and are longer.
Ron,
Come to Ohio & you WILL fish there! We would have a ball & I’d send you off with a box of PB fudge.

i use a 2wt here in Singapore… its not the rod i pull out on a day to day basis but when i feel like working a little harder on the casting and having a little more fun when i DO hook something, i grab it, or when i’m fishing some of our smaller water here… the peacock bass dont get so big and are a real blast… think… 3lb bass 2wt orvis superfine… that’s fun… however its a huge pain when you want to cast bigger flies size 6,8, or something that’s weighted… i do push the rod out of its elemet sometimes but it still performs and gets the job done.
I use my Elkhorn 8 ft. 4 pc. 2 wt. for mostly small brook trout fishing, but it is a lot of fun for larger stockies The largest, being a 16 " Rainbow that didn’t want to be landed.
Actually, my wife likes it so much that I might have to get another.
Elkhorn builds a very nice rod for the price and their customer service is super.
TwoWeight
Isn’t that the official motto of the NBOF?
I have two, 2 wt rods. I built one for my grandson to use, with a Forecast blank (nice MEDIUM fast action) and I built another one with a Cedar Blank I was given. It’s an IM6 graphite and the wholesale distributor is in Michigan but I have no idea how where to get the blank via retail nor do I now the actual cost of the blank. It’s just a bit crisper in action. I use 2 wts for pan fish and small trout streams…where I know that my chances of hooking a monster are rare to none. It’s great for small dry flies and smaller trout creeks. If you get a sizable trout on it, theres no way to keep him out of the wood if the creek has a lot of fish cover. If its pretty breezy out…I leave the 2 wt in the car. It does not get used nearly as much as my 3 or 4 wt rod.
I just finished building a 6"6 2 weight Rainshadow blank.(My first build) I certainly is a sweet little rod for some of the overgrown small stream fishing we do. Unfortunately after the first outing with it and after a hard days fishing I broke it walking back to the car ![]()

Morneb,
That had to hurt. You did a wonderful job on the build though. Very nice looking rod. Is there another in your future?
Thanks. Yes I did hurt. Cant actually believe I was so stupid. I will probably fix this one and then I hope to build a 3 weight. With our poor economy and terrible exchange rate at the moment I will have to wait a bit though. We cannot get any blanks locally so will have to import a blank.
But it is a nice Build for your first, love the wrap color.
I KNOW how I would feel if I did that. ![]()
…actually… I did…I broke the tip off my first build last year. I think it was a wayward beadhead that did it. (Shikari SHX 9ft 4wt). The problem is… they are no longer in business so no blanks available to replace it with.

You all got my juices flowing. Now I want to build me a 6’ Lami 2 weight!
What do you think?

I have a Winston 6 1/2’ 2 WT. I like to use on those days when life just needs to

Morneb sorry to hear about the rod it…you did a great job on it. I am building on a forecast rx6 6’6" 2wt, I think it is the same blank or very similar. Yours has inspired me…
I have a question after holding the rod in my hand. What reel are you all using with your short 2wt’s? I would imagine it would have to be ultralight weight. …any suggestions would be appreciated. The budget only allows for about $50 or less on the reel, less would be ideal.

I use a Ross FLYCAST I that I picked up on closeout for 30 bucks at Gander Mountain as suggested by Joe Valencic. My rod is a Forecast 2 piece 6’6" 2wt blank built for me by Joe & it matches up perfectly. You may find some out on Ebay…I might suggest Sierra Trading Post, but I find their shipping costs to be outrageous.

Buddy built a 2wt for me with my components. We fished side by side catching small mouth on a lake. Believe Buddy. What ever he says is gospel. He is a fountain of knowledge AND fishing skills. His poppers caught me a lot of fish. What ever he says believe it. He knows…and he knows from experience. Not just reading a lot. Fantastic fly fisherman…whether trout, pike, bass, or panfish. He should write fishing books. Instead he is a 35 year master glass sculptor person. So he barely has time to ever fish due to popularity of his glass work. He is very busy with that. So no time to write books.
Having said that…I am shooting for a 1 wt. I have a brush, tree covered clear little stream that has 3-5" trout…5 being a nice big one. Wild. No…no big ones…but it is the challenge and the “thrill of the hunt”. I have already fished there and caught some. Now I want to try it with a rig more suitable to the conditions. I plan to fish it with a one weight rod, one weight line…NO strike indicator…and NO weight. My effort is to fish the lightest outfit I can afford and attempt to “sense” the little fish’s bite. Maybe a poor strategy. I dunno. But it is not meant to be a rig for long distance casting. Pretty close in…but fly casting is required…just not far.
But as Buddy said…a 2 wt overlined with a 3wt line is a hoot. Do not hesitate to build one.

I have a very nice 6 1/2 foot 2 wt that I built on a DanCraft blank. If you have not built a rod on a DanCraft blank, you should give it a try. Excellent blanks that I would rate with my Sage rods but not nearly as expensive. I have no affiliation with DanCraft. I am just a very satisfied customer who has built several rods on his blanks. He’s also a great guy to do business with.

Morneb,
Echoing Ron’s comments here. Nice job on your rod and I’m sorry you busted her! You did a good job on her.
Wishing you well on the re-do…(you clutz you…;))
Be careful out there. Looks like a beauty of a little stream you have. SO DIFFERENT from what I know of Africa!
Really, that rod looks very nice!
Jeremy.
