Which side do you put your vise?

I’ve always tied with my vise to the left of me, over a table, and am considering switching it to my right, so that I can adjust the height lower without hitting the table. Are you guys righties or lefties? Or middle of the road, which would still hit the table. I have just read about people who are more comfortable with the vise at a lower point than is available on your tying table, so am going to try that.

I’m lost. How does swapping from one side to the other allow for a lower height?

I’m right-handed so my vise is on my left and I work the thread with my right. I’m partial to my vise being higher than most. I like resting my elbows on the table and having the jaws at eye level.

i use an upside down extension piece to drop the head of my vice so the head is quite a bit lower than “normal”. i find it is less strain on my neck and shoulders that way. incidentally, my vice is on the left

i would think the position of your vise is determined by which is your dominant hand i.e., vise on the left for right-handers and opposite for left-handers. Vise height is whatever is most comfortable…

If I place the vise on my left, my right side is over the table, so can’t lower it or will hit the table. With the extension like Garthman has, I can lower it down and have my right hand over thin air to work, but as Don mentions, I can’t rest my elbows on the table then. Just looking for the most comfortable position.

Could you clamp something (a piece of plywood, e.g.) to the table, creating a cantilever to have your vise hang over the edge? Then you could drop the height and tie at a lower elevation without bumping against anything.
Going in the other direction, is there anyway to raise your seat?

Scott

Thanks, I already have my chair as high as it will go, but will look into something to drop off of my table. Would like to find something like a keyboard drawer thingie from a computer desk.

Perhaps a picture of your predicament?

Having switched to the NorVise years ago the main unit is placed in front of my left shoulder

Remove the vise from the clamp and use a portable pedestal. Put it on the edge of the table with the vise hanging over the edge. No sure what you can do about the height except invest in a lower table or desk.

Personally, I can’t visualize his problem. Picture would help.

I use a pedestal vise. The placement I use is that the vice post is just inside my left shoulder with the hook eye being just slightly to the right of the center of my head. I don’t really make a point of setting up that way, but that’s how things were when I just went and sat in the chair. It might be interesting to look at few videos of really good tyers and see what they do

I think my problem is that my chair is too close to the bottom of my tying table. If I lower it enough to be comfortable, then I have to look up at my vise, so if I hang it over the edge of the table, I can lower it enough to look at it straight on. As soon as I figure out the excellent instructions we got on using photobucket, I will post pics. Thanks for all the comments. I tried to find youtube pics of tyers sitting positions, but they seem to focus on their hands for some reason.

Aha! I found what I need, watching a video of Kelly Galloup - his tying desk probably cost 5,000 dollars, but has an arrangement where he can tie while looking down at the fly. I’ll just save my pennies.
