Where to find the hat from "A river runs through it"

Well I finally saw “A River Runs Through It” and I was wondering if anyone knew where to get a hat like the one worn by Brad Pitt in the movie?
Thanks

Dude

I have an Aussie out back hat, made of oil cloth, it is the best damn hat I ever had, I stopped watching that movie when I saw how well Pitt was casting, Pure B.S… Maybe the older guy whom played his Dad, but not him or the other Kid, just do not buy it…

Knew that movie would cause Problems…

Not sure what the hat looks like, but the Aussie hat is COOL… period…

I believe the style of hat is “fedora”, popular at the time. In the 40’s and 50’s nearly every man wore one both in dress up and casual.
Do a google for the word…you should find what you want.

I’m not sure, but it looks like it may have at one time been a Stetson Gun Club hat that has been “aged” and “shaped”. Check the Stetson gun club series of hats out and see if one is close enough. Any decent hat shop could re-shape the hat to suit your needs.

Also, check out images of Stetson Open Road. That style of hat can be reformed into a fedora style. I have a couple gun clubs and an open road and they are very high quality hats. I have a couple custom made hats and like the open road and gun club about as well.

I have been searching for a decent pic of brad pitt in that hat… I can’t work out exactly what it is. re the Aussie Outback Hat, I think that is more likely to be a New Zealand oil cloth hat. I believe Cabelas sell a hat in that range, or you could do a search for “Akubra” hats which area our main hat makers. I suspect the hat in question is more like a stetson hat though… again Cabelas? I actually bought a Cabelas hat recently in a similar style, and when it arrived I was amazed to find it had been made in the US for Cabelas by our Akubra company! Is nothing sacred???

Some pictures from the movie are here http://www.bradpittfan.com/mriver.htm and some good ones of the hat are included

You could review this site http://www.noggintops.com/ for something suitable for you. Website search fee is $45 - please send cheque or new fly line  . Cheers.

Is this a current movie? I don’t see a listing for it at the theater… [/sarcasm]

When you are on the stream with your hat tipped slighly back on your head, remember to turn to your fishing buddy and shout…

What are they bitin’ on?!

Greg H,
A $45.00 search Fee?? Would you consider a slightly used container of Metamucil instead???
Thanks,
Doug

Could well be an Akubra “Sydney” hat or an 'Angler"… check them out in the US on this link.

Hey! The fiber jokes are mine. Quit stealing my material.

“Loose the ties that bind you.”

It’s not up to me to try to dissuade anyone that wants to look like Brad Pitt…
but the old wool crusher is probably the best fishing hat ever

They’re not as expensive as those Aussie hats either

(and a red one will keep the black flies away too)

Looks like an Akubra Federation or Federation Deluxe that’s been tweaked. I’ve got two Akubras and wear them religiously. Being from Indiana I get more than my fair share of puns and jokes…

Tried doing the small Pic thing.

But this is my Aussie hat, Made by the - Australian Out back Trading Company.

Made of oil cloth like the big coats they sell.

The best hat I have ever had, water proof, lite, etc…

1 1/2 years out of the army and have not cut my hair, will not cut, until I am worm food either…

I think it is just a plain old Fedora as mentioned. The Kind Indiana Jones wore and was popular after Harrison Ford wore it. And don’t forget the BLUES BROTHERS. More than likely it is a Stetson.

Your best bet is to keep beating the shelves at the local Goodwill in the hopes that someone cleaned out their grandfathers or great grandfathers closet. I can recall that my grandfather and my dad wore those hats way back. I was hoping to find some in my grandmothers house when we cleaned it out for the estate sale but my mother had already tossed those into the garbage. :? …We have some silk top hats from the 30s and Derby bowlers from the 20s and 30s, in mint condition though, but that would look stupid on a trout stream.

It’s a Fedora hat which in itself comes in many styles and makes. If you don’t want to spend a ton for top of the line Stetsons then have a look at places like these.

Brad’s hat has been abused and trained to look like that so keep that in mind. You won’t find one that looks exactly like that one unless it was grandpa’s.

The closest I found at a reasonable price was this:

In the color camel.

Check it out,

Nothing a steam iron or a tea kettle can’t fix.
But then again, keep in mind it is a WOOL/FELT hat and that means hot as heck,
But I guess it is the image …right LOL

Here is how the women folk do it in these here parts

Here are a couple reasonably close just to give you an idea.

Gun Club Hats - by Stetson

I have one like this only a little darker brown:

Open Road:

Usual disclaimers apply. I was just looking for some hat photos. Some of these are for sale or from hat shops and I have no affililation with the hat shops and am not trying to drum up business. Just posting links to some photos.

I have one of these:

No, I do not fly fish with it. Bought mine while I was in the 6th Air Cavalry Brigade at the 1st Cav Museum in 1986. I paid $80 for it then and that included the appropriate braid and brass.

Raw:

A GOOD felt hat is actually made from fur felt; most notably beaver felt and it is rated in quality with XX’s; the more XXX’s the better the quality. The fedora is a style of hat which was popular in this country from the 1920-1960’s when men’s hats fell out of favor, as the legend goes; when JFK went hat-less at his Inauguration.

Since this was THE most popular hat men wore; it is THE hat you will see men wearing in old photos from the era while doing everything from yard chores to construction to fishing . Baseball caps were worn by children and not as common or as available as they are today so the fedora was IT for most. Visored caps became readily available as military surplus after WWII and Korea so seeing fishermen in the 1950’s with “caps” became commonplace.

The hat that Mr. Pitt is wearing is probably SUPPOSED to be a late 1940’s fedora style hat. As the 40’s progressed the style became brims that were not as wide as in the 30’s and the crown wasn’t as high either. In the 1950’s both the brim and crown were even smaller. The most popular crown shape was a depression that appears to be teardrop shaped when viewed from above with two indentations at the front. Most men wore the hat with the front brim down and the back brim up except when it rained when many would flip the rear brim down. In the 1920’s & 1930’s a simple crease in the center of the crown was also popular with the same brim set-up. A good hat will hold it’s shape and although the initial shape was usually steamed in at the hat shop; on old hats the indentations are much crisper and sharper than on the hats made today.

Stetson among others still make many styles of hat including fedoras but the quality just isn’t the same as the older hats. The newer hats just don’t keep their shape the way the old hats did. The old felt was thinner too resulting in a hat that wasn’t as uncomfortable in summer. One of my new Stetsons is so heavy I can only wear it in the winter. I have at least 6 Stetson beaver felt hats and the nicest one is 70+ years old and was my grandfather’s. Even a custom hat shop I used to frequent in NYC LOVED this hat.

If you feel compelled to get one even though I think you will find it VERY hot in the summer; do yourself a favor and DON’T buy wool felt which will shrink and DON’T buy a new hat which has less desirable felt but instead look for an old hat. You can get it refurbished and if it’s a good hat; it is well worth the investment.

I personally prefer a baseball cap. It is lighter and more functional and keeps people from confusing me with Brad… [/url:28675]

If you really want to imitate Mr. Pitt; then shape it like he did in “The Movie”.

If you want to wear a fedora and have it look the way it was meant to look; watch the movie The Treasure of Sierra Madre and study the hat of Fred C. Dobbs; (Humphrey Bogart). That’s the way a fedora is SUPPOSED to look.

By the way, while the Treasure of Sierra Madre ain’t a fishing movie; the hats were much better than in that fishin’ flick!

'Hats all I got to say on the subject…
