where to buy a begginer's outfit

I am teaching my father in law (a looooong time worm dunker) how to fly fish this season and I want to buy him a begginer’s outfit, with everything you need. Any reccomendations?

walmart?

Cabela’s Three Forks

Cabela’s and Bass Pro have some very respectable complete starter outfits for very reasonable prices in the $80-200 range. These outfits are not so cheap that they will soon be discarded entirely by an advancing fly angler, but not so expensive as to be a waste of money if the hook isn’t set well. Bass Pro can also set up good combos in that price range that exceed the quality of their pre-packaged offerings for about $150.

Another great option is a TFO rod (under $100), an Okuma Airframe reel ($40), and an SA Mastery line ($40). For under $200, that combo is HARD to beat for trout and panfish!

In the $100 range, the best choice is a Redington Crosswater combo.

Orvis Clearwater is another line of products to look at in that same price range.

And you can keep the cost trimmed a bit by opting for a 2-piece rod instead of a travel rod. No sense springing for a 4-piece unless he’s actually gonna travel with it in the future.

I wrote an article on this subject awhile back where I field tested all of these and more side-by-side over about two months. And these were my conclusions in a nutshell.

H&H has a nice combo from St Croix

Try Global Dorber, a sponsor here. They have a good deal with that 5wt. Silvertip Combo outfit. I think it has everything but the flies. Bottom of the page.

Third the 3 forks, nice starter outfit.

Bass-pro’s Hobbs creek series is a nice little starter outfit as well. I picked up a 6wt Hobbs creek as a spare and find that I use it as a primary more often than not. If I recall correctly, I did strip the cheap line and replaced it with 444 which made a world of difference.

Probably not much help but,

thanks everyone.
Not sure of the price range. Probably under $200 so I dont scare him off of the sport before he starts

Go to Cabelas.com click on the bargain cave link. Then clicko on the fly fishing link. they have some very good deals in there. you Can probably get started for under 200 there. Possibly a St. Croix rod with a Cabelas Prestige Reel. That will cost you just under 100

id recommend the 5 wt Redington Crosswater fly rod kit in either 2 or 4 piece, built after Redington was acquired by Sage… Around $99.99 or $129.99 … Great, great starter rod in my small opinion, Im still starting out, but I liked it a lot when I fished my friends. But not just that, I know lots of adults who enjoy fishing it too. make sure to get the new model, not the 3/4 , 5/6 models… im not a big fan of my ol Hobbs Creek, but I do admit buying a new line makes a word of difference, but adds another $40-60 to cost

I will second the Redington Crosswater outfit opinion. Best deal going on a combo I think.

I would recommend an Orvis Clearwater combo with a midflex rod. You are paying toward the highend of entry level prices but your father in law won’t have to trade it in. I still use my Clearwater as my full-time fishing rod. 8T
