Being strictly into the tying and rod wrapping mode up here in the frozen tundra, much dreaming is going on. Thinking about new challenges for the year. This summer my target species will be smallies on the Mississppi. How about you? Criteria: New water (in my case) or a new species … with a fly rod! JGW
John,
Same here!! Stream/river smallies on the fly are my number 1 goal (new flyrod species) this year, plus I’m gonna try to take a carp as well.
Mike
Same as Mike. Carp, carp, carp. I intend to pick up where I left off last year with them. I can’t wait to get back at it. I want to discover more and more good carpin’ waters within, say, a 2 hour drive of the house. I’ve got tournament bass fishermen friends scouting for me and I intend to do lots of scouting on my own. My goal is to catch a 20 pounder. I’ll probably have it mounted if and when I do. I’ve added a 20 pound carp to my list of fish I’d mount to go along with a 10 pound bass (9lbs 5oz is my biggest so far) or a 30 lb. striper (25 lbs is my biggest). So if I caught a 20 lb. carp, it would be my first fish mount. A big largemouth or a big striper up until now are the only 2 fish I’d mount but I think the carp is now “worthy” enough to go on my wall. Of course these fish would have to come from my native waters. I know, for example, a 10 lb bass in California is not a trophy.
I want to become more proficient casting left handed.
I want to get my tying room more organized so I really know what I have.
Rick
My spring goals are to become more familiar with the water around my new home town (Stillwater, OK). Of course, that mostly pertains to carp. I’d like to catch a 20 as well, but I don’t have any plans for it other than putting it back where it came from. I don’t think I’d even have a wall big enough here at the fraternity house!
For this summer, that will depend on my work situation. If I can get a job that takes me out of Oklahoma I’ll settle for getting familiar with whatever I find when I get where I’m going. If I get a job that keeps me living in my other new home town (SW Oklahoma City) I’ll be trying to get familiar with the water there. Specifically the Canadian River. My house is only a mile and a half away as the crow flies, and I think it has some good carp and gar potential.
I want to tie flies that the fish don’t laugh at. Hmmmmmm.
To fish in short sleeves again.

At this point,I just want to fish. This time of year brings on depression(or so says my wife). One of my goals every yr is to fish one more day than I did the previous yr.

I would like to hit the white bass run. I have yet to catch them in numbers with a fly rod.

Steve,
Being from Oklahoma, you’ve got to get into the Sandbass some time. It’s one of life’s real treats. Spring and Summer are the best times for a flyrod in my opinion although I’ve caught them every month of the year other ways. Fall can be good too. The Spring spawn is coming up. It’s super. Many places they run up the creeks and rivers. We don’t have much of that here in SW Okla. though. Around here they mostly spawn against windy banks. We don’t have the good deep creeks here for them to run up. The Summer top water season is a gas too. They surface usually early and late in the day. You need a boat for this action on a lake although I have caught them from a jet ski (believe it or not). You need something you can race to them on before they go down. The Fall is also a good time to catch them shallow on windy points when they “feed up” on shad before Winter sets in. In the Winter they go deep and aren’t too accessable to the flyrodder. Use Clousers and Deceivers the same size as the shad they’re chasing. Blue and White, Chartruese and White or White are good. A 6 wt with sinking or integrated line is what I use. You can cut the wind better on the big lakes with a sinking line whereas the wind tends to catch a floating line. Good luck. If you do get into them, please post. I’d like to hear about it. If you’re down this way look me up and if they’re biting we’ll take the bass boat out and give 'em a try.

The girl that cuts my hair better keep calling it white blond.
Mine are basically the same as Robert’s, except I’ll be adding catching my first grass carp. Robert, speaking of finding new carp waters, I was at the OKC Tackle Show a couple of weeks ago and visited a bowfishing booth and asked them where the best place was in Oklahoma to find carp. One of the guys said Arbuckle was his personal favorite. We might want to give it a try sometime. Not sure how far that is from your house.
I’d like to have better luck with warmouths on the fly. I’d like to maybe find some smallmouth in northeast Georgia. And finally, I’d like to complete my bamboo rod, and a little 3 weight Rainshadow I just bought and Christen them both appropriatly.

Poke, as soon as I find the carp up here I’ll give you a call
Poke,
Arbuckle is certainly within my range. I’ve never fished it but I’ve always wanted to. Let’s plan on going this year. I’ll take the bass boat like we’ve done in the past and drive around and scout the place before we get out and wade. We can always bass fish if we don’t see anything. Email me with the details when it gets warmer. Maybe John can come down and join us.
RW here,
Talking my wife into letting me go on more fishing trips this year than I already go on.
I want to catch up to her and her bridge tournaments.

I’ve never fished warm water before.
My goal this spring/summer is to catch my 1st Bass (SM&LM), catch my 1st carp, get a muskie, try for gar, and get all the different panfish I can find!!
Paul
I don’t really have goals anymore since I retired, but if I did it’d be to fish ever’ single day this year!
Donald
Donald,
