 Well, hell-o! I didn’t know you could do that!! Now I don’t need the pattern! I can figure it out from THAT picture!!
Carp’s not playing nice!!
Let’s see a picture of that fly (or feather) and I bet we can figure it out!
Hi,
Here’s a collection of my favorites.

Anything to make the “tail” sticking out under the thread and olive thread. That is pretty much it. Easy-squeezy
what size do you’ll tie your midges in
Hi,
The ones I posted are on size 12, which is the largest size I tie (hardly a midge size really). I tie them down to size 16 on the grub hooks, and have a few in 18’s and 20’s on straight shanked hooks. I don’t have any hooks smaller than 20, so thats my cut off.
Jeff same here i don’t tie anything smaller than sz. 20 which is the size i use to tie midges
Hi WWFF,
20 and smaller is probably the appropriate size for true midge representation, however, the larger ones work fine too. I gave a copy of the top one in the photo to my Dad’s friend who caught 10 brookies the first time he used it and 27 the next time he tried! To top things, nobody else was having any luck at all. Of course, after that, there was nothing left of the fly so I sent off two dozen as replacements. He was finishing some stills in Nova Scotia, early in the season. I suspect they were taken as mosquito larvae.
I don’t have a picture of the midge I use. I think the name is a harvest midge.
Hook-Tiemco 2499SP-BL (EXELENT HOOK)
size 16
3/32 Tungsten Bead
Danville’s 6/0 (no coler listed) but it’s a rust brown
Black Ultra Wire
Tye like any other. I fish it under an indicator. Mid depth.
In the feeding lane.
This even works for the kid under a bobber on spinning tackle. Some times even better cause he’s not in the trees and bushes.
PS Red with black wire works well also.
hey Jeff,
I’ll have to tie some of those up. Thats a good number of fish on one day. I’ll try a few here.

its a zebra varient very effective throughout the White River system. Ive switched from standard zebra over to these and not just because we started selling his ties. I added then as he beggar was catching so many fish.
He’s very precise on color/thread/bead/rib combinations, and I don’t argue cos they work

Since no one’s said it yet, the Lady McConnell, another Brian Chan. I fish lakes that get #16 midges all summer and it gets 'em when skating adults are out!
I’m partial to a Griffth Gnat size #18-#24 and thread midgets size #20-#24.
I might add that I’m disappointed with a certain FAOL member. This BB has always been about helping and sharing. Someone is not being nice. ![]()

My all time favorite (only because I haven’t used many midge patterns) is the Crystal Midge. I have been able to catch fish using this pattern while others around the area have gone fish-less, making it one of my go-to flies and it is quite durable and easy to tie. I tie it in size 16, 18, and 20.

:tieone:
Lee,
I assume that I’m “the other around you who has gone fishless.” I have my line all set if that happens again. “I think I’ll switch to a pattern with a hook.” We need to try out your crystal midge again very soon. Ned
Ned - I wasn’t referring to you, that only occurred once that I used the crystal midge while I was with you. It has happened a few more times than that. You will notice I said fish, which means not only trout. I’ve caught brim and even a catfish on the little thing. I think part of it’s attraction is it looks like it has that air bubble that nymphs and emergers seem to be wrapped in.
The weekend of the 16th and 17th would be a good time for a line wetting experience unless I end up having to work. I know I will have an overtime work assignment coming up, but I don’t know when. Lee
I would have to say, any midge that I didn’t have to tie! (LOL) Just kidding, it would be a peacock midge in a size 20. There is a pic and recipe on my web site under Fly of the month. Check it out if you like.
