whats the perfect dry fly rod?

I don’t know that there is a “best” dry-fly rod, but some of my favorites for this type of work are the T&T LPS series, especially the 8’6" 4-weight, and the Winston WT or LT series, particularly the 8’ 3 weight WT, or the 8’3" 4 weight LT.

All great rods for fishing dries.

Fred,
a 5 piecer sounds pretty good too, since I like to travel a lot, do you like that 8’3 4 LT better than say the 8’ or 8’6 #4 WT
and why? or why not?
is it alot faster than the WT series?
thanks,

Hi Troutbuster,

In general, I like the LT series better than the WT series, but there are scores of folks who feel just the opposite.

The LT is a bit quicker in action, though it still is not a fast-action rod. LT rods are very smooth and delicate, yet they have some power down low, which helps in the wind and when casting heavier flies.

If I never had to travel to fish, I would still choose the 5-piece LT series over the WT, simply because I like its action better. These rods are Cadillacs!

But the WT rods are sweet, too. You just have to try them for yourself.

Also, I would really encourage you to try the Thomas and Thomas LPS series, if you’re serious about a dry-fly rod. These rods are first-class, too, with impeccable workmanship. The LPS series is my favorite in the T&T lineup.

Good Luck,

Fred

Perfect??? I suggest it is one that you can afford and learn to cast well

you’re right, many good rods out there, and it’s about personal preference…

Well I have only had the pleasure of casting 3 rods, a 8’6" 5wt Redington, a 7’6"
3wt Cabelas Three Forks, and my new rod a 7’9" 3wt St Croix Leged custom built. And my favorite is the St. Croix rod, it casts like magic and it is as light as a feather and it seems to fit the small Iowan streams pretty well.

Perfect? The Hardy perfection glass.

Trouts don’t live in ugly places

troutbuster- You might take a look at the new ECHO rods by Rajeff Sports. I was able to cast a few of these new rods and they are real nice. They are 4 piece rods with an extra tip. The tips are med fast and fast. Something new on the market for this coming year. I have a 9’ 4Wgt coming this spring. For $269.95 you can’t beat the price and the workmanship is very good to boot. Just a heads up on these new rod. I get nothing for this information. There web-site is

Hi guys. I want to let you know I tried a couple, and ended up with a winston LT 7’9 4wt, and it’s very nice crisp casting and fishing rod…
I also tried the 8’3 for a 4 wt but like the 7’9 better, the bIIx in 4 wt’s are nice too btw… thanks…
