Well now that fish are getting into summer patterns and spring/spawn season is over, what flies were you using? Anything new that you have tried that really caught the fish?

The new rod I have coming.
I’m heading out early tomorrow morning in my float tube. I’ll be going on a pond that I normally hit golfballs into on the golf course where I normally play golf. They have been nailing poppers down there right and left when I’ve been there over the last two weeks - I’ll see if they are still hitting those or if i need to go deeper to get them.
I’ll post pics when I get some…
Other than the rubber legged slumpbuster and the Scrat (FOTW submissions in progress…), the big news has been the continued success of my first season of kayak fishing.
While not exactly new that white colored boa yarn leech with a bead head has been real effective for me this year. Both on bigger bass & crappie.

I put on a #4 orange stimulator (thanks Joe) just to find out if steelhead were looking up and got rewarded with about a 15" cutthroat…surprised the heck out of me. For new flies my #4 ice chenille Renegade has been doing fairly well on lmb, bigger crappie, gill chase it, i’ve gotten trout and small steel have looked at but i want it to work on smb which so far smb aren’t busy here yet. I keep trying it and since the lmb like it just fine, i think the smb will too.

This morning I had bluegill, green sunfish and a couple bass all tear up an orange rubber legged popper
it will go all day long without ever having to change it for something else. not new but exciting!
I have been using a prince nymnph with yelow biot tails, purple peacock for the body and white biot wings.
Also an irresitible with orange hackle at the bend, blue and yellow peacock body, and white hackle at the front.
Not alot of fish on either most of the time, but a few on each fly every time i try it, gills, crapie and bass.

Those gills are BIG! I can’t wait to see the Scrat.
I’ve been playing with woven body flies lately. The fish liked them a lot last night! Also need to submit a FOTW article for a fly I’ve been having great luck with this spring and summer… just haven’t had the time to get the camera set up for pics!

What is the fly made out of? What kind of foam?
I’ve been tying top water bugs and need a foam that does not soak up water.

its a closed cell foam at about 1/4 inch thick

I discovered that a purple boa yarn leech, although it doesn’t float, can work as a mulberry fly when fish are feeding on the fruit. A Prince Nymph can also work in a pinch.
I also tied up marabou leeches, but tied them with some turkey flats on the back as a carapace along with some fine copper ribbing up to the thorax. Makes a quick & easy hex nymph. You can vary the color by using different-colored marabou. Something similar (with appropriate modifications) could produce a fairly quick crayfish pattern.

That fly strikes me if tied with an open cell foam it would be a good wet fly nymph. Since I fish stillwaters I think I’ll try some feeling I’d be imitating a dragon fly nymph.
