Why a 9’er. Most I’ve seen are anywhere from 24" to 6’ max. You can add on up to 6’ of tippet to the leader.
I’m not knocking a 9’er, but curosity has me asking- what would be the reason for one that length?
Duck, I am sure you are meaning Vanish Transition Flurocarbon 4lb…right? For sinking anyway…seems what most people like.
Mojo…reason I want a 9’ one. Well, not trying to be a smart alec…but for the same reason anyone wants one. Stores sell them clear up to FIFTEEN foot leaders! SOMEBODY is buying them and using them. The stores continue to stock them.
But, furthermoer…spelling?..yuk…uh…when fly fishermen around here talk about how to fish in our area they always say a 9’ leader and…etc. …9…9…9…that is just what I continue to hear. So figured to make one and see if my luck improved. Another question about why to use a 9’ leader is…why not?
OH, just thought of this…My friend and I were planning a trip to the San Juan. My friend said to take NINE FOOT leaders. However our trip got put off till next spring. But just another example of a 9’ leader recommendation. This friend approaching 80 knows the San Juan, and how to catch there.
Just the other day I was fishing a stream and a fellow walked by leaving. I asked what he caught fish on and he said a 9’ leader and then he showed me the fly.
They are talking 9 ft leaders overall…Maybe you want to think of a 6 ft furled leader with a 3 ft tippet of your choice…it will turn it over just fine…pretty much what Mojo was suggesting…
Incidently most furl boards…[8 ft]… will do close to 7 ft leaders …and add 2 ft of tippet…your choice…
Ok Phil and Mojo. I am understanding what you say. I was thinking 9’ leader, then indicator, then tippet, then lead fly, then tippet then dropper. So…I can make a 6.5’ furled leader on my board. That and 6’ of tippet is apparently enough. All I know is I got skunked the other day…and was indeed using a shorter leader.
Now…why do they sell 15’ leaders over at the store? I know 6’ of that leader…well I guess it is a tapered leader with the tippet already on it. But I don’t think 6’ of that tapered leader is all tippet and you STILL have 9’ left! If it were a 6’ leader then it has 9’ of tippet.
Also…if a 6’ leader is adequate…why did FG state onetime that she sometimes uses a 50’ leader. Hope my memory is not wrong on that one.
Furled leaders act way different than mono leader. I suppose some waters will dictate a 15’ leader (why? maybe someone said to take it because shorter leaders will spook the fish) I really don’t know. A 6’ leader with a 5’ or 6’ tippet will give you a great presentation unlike a long tapered mono leader.
Now about the long leaders Flygoddess is referring to. 35’ is the longest she’s ever used, and it’s strictly for indicator deep nymphing in a lake. No casting is involved. It’s a drop and run thing.
I would suggest you experiment with your furled leaders and try different tippet lengths (and sizes). Uni or mono, I think you’ll come up with a combination you’ll really like eventually and pretty much stick with.
