CCS Guys? Well, this one says that objectively the rod that is 9’long on Earth would still be 9’ Long on the Moon. The AA and the ELN of the Rod on Earth would still measure the same on the Moon.
Subjectively, not sure how the rod would "feel"on the Moon, but I don’t suppose I would feel any sillier casting there than in front of my house.
When the experts disagree, the ignorant are free to choose.
one thing missing here - you forget that the temperature differences(aprox. 400F in the sun, thus melting the plastic; and -400F on the dark side freezing the line and making it too brittle to roll out smoothly. At least those are the temperatures according to the movies…) wouldn’t allow you to cast the line at all, let alone string it up with those silly gloves. I wonder if they make a fingerless version of the space suit gloves?

Man Muddler Mike! You beat me to the one thing I wanted to throw into the mix. I guess you could find a point between the light and dark sides of the moon where the temp is suitable for casting. And we all know the fishing is best at dawn and dusk…
“So. . . your flyline, casting on the moon, has about two seconds in the air before it hits the ground.”
okie,
I am sorry to say this oxymoron blows your whole theory. After your post I just skimmed the rest of the thread and like most of em this is way over my head. Besides, you have Dots and can see I like simple things.

The DOT will help keep your fly and leader from wandering around in the atmoshere as you traverse the surface in your moon rover searching for the illusive speckled moon trout.

I think the low gravity/atmosphere would affect action of the rod. A fly rod makes a hyperbolic bend do to gravity and air resistance. It would sort of be like casing a fly with a piece of rebar. But it would give a new meaning to floating line.
PS I’m a Calculus teacher and impressed with the math.
I guess we would have to call em Moon Dots. and expand from there to Mars; although, I think it would be my great, great, grandchild’s business by then.

With no air resistance to contend with and much reduced gravity, You should be able to make some very long casts! The inertia of the line would be the same so it should shoot out like a shot out of a cannon. Fishing however would be much the same as it is here on earth…lousy.
If I cast a fly line on the moon, it will coincide with the moment that extra terrestrial life is discovered there. You doubt it? Its all in the science of casting.
I would be ready to boom out my very first 120’ cast and I would find the only tree on the moon with my backcast.

this reminds me of comedian richard wright’s question–“What would happen if you were traveling at the speed of light and you turned your headlights on?”
(It’s raining, stripers aren’t here, and I’m bored. Can ya tell?)
