What should I tie?

I am tying some flies to sell this summer. 4th of July is a very big celebration where I live, and there are alot of people seeling odds 'n ends. I’m farily new to fishing so i’m not too sure as to what to tie… Me and my friend will be doing this together, with about four patterns each. I believe we will be tying mostly dries, I’ve already tied parachute adams, so thats one pattern down. Can anyone recomend some good patterns to tie for the pacific northwest rivers? Thanks for any input.

Suspecting you will be selling to tourists,
you might try some of the colorful spey flies shown in the Atlantic tying section here on FAOL.
Remember flies have to be bought - and colorful is probably why the Royal Coachman is the most sold fly in the US.

Flytyer317,

If your tying to sell to tourists, LF is right on the money. Nothing like a pretty, flashy, colorful spey fly to get a pocket book to open.

If your going to be selling fishermen, check out the woven body flies that are in Denny Conrad’s article. They look great and work well for catching fish.

Another one that always gets attention is the deer hair mouse. Sometimes folks just want it because it’s cute, but the bass fishers will know what they’re really for.

Since you have already tied Parachute Adams, and want three more Dry Fly patterns, consider the following for Western Waters…

Humpys
(great for riffles, and rough water, almost unsinkable)

Stimulator
(great general attractor pattern for Grasshoppers, and Salmonfly hatches)

Ants
( commonly found in most streams)

Hi David,

Besides the flies already suggested a Renegade is always a good searching pattern in that part of the country. Good luck & …

The first responses are certainly on the money. Spey flies are a nice show fly that tourist will pay for (just for the beautiful display); that covers flies that catch fishermen. Now figure (or ya already know)
the local killer patterns (the go-to’s); some may even be your own creations which gets you known (markets your talent)…& if they are super fish slayers on those waters, the word will spread fast. Now that covers flies that catch fish !!!

Hi David…lots of good suggestions…I’ll add that since it will be the 4th of july, have some red, white and blue souvenier type flys for the non fishermen to buy…good luck!..Jason

Sounds like maybe a town-wide flea market type of day. LF is probably right if you are selling to tourists. If you are tying for fishermen and tie them you can still aim your salesmanship at the nonfishing wives (or husbands). Don’t know how much experience you have. If not much, stick with simple patterns.
