Tom Morgan Rodsmiths 8’ 4wt graphite, Sage Z-Axis 9’ 5 wt, Loomis NRX 9’ 8 wt
Bamboo excluded? Probably none.
I am pretty happy with the rods I have…
I think I would like to try a Tankara but I’m not sure I want one.
I would like a nice medium to fast action rod in a 6 wt. To many “fast action” rods seem to actually be a weight higher. Ie. a fast 6wt is actually just a 7wt. As far as brand, if they’re in a giving mood, I’d take a Sage One, or Orvis Helios. Loved both when I lawn cast them.
If I had to buy myself, I’d probably go down to a midrange price point, and go TFO BVK.

I’m pretty happy with the line up I have and I really don’t find myself wanting for any others …at the moment.![]()
I would love to have one of the new Thomas and Thomas ESP 8’ 4 or 5wt’s. Wish they used downlocking hardware with their pretty, polished aluminum, scripted fittings on those rods however.

I would love to get a hold of a Green River 8 or 8 1/2 ’ for 5 wt .I have a Green River 2 wt that is one of those rods I’ll never sell. Picked up a Winston WT 8 1/2 ’ for 5 wt from Labtrout that is quickly becoming my favorite all around rod so would like to compare it to that.
best,
Steve
Sage ONE in a six weight two hander
I have one and it is saweet.
Yeah agreed. Why would we exclude bamboo? Rod makers still make bamboo rods.
To me all graphite rods feel the same. Kind of like a heavy duty fly swatter (that ought to ruffle a few feathers).
Especially when you compare them to the sweetness of a good bamboo rod.
I excluded bamboo because my guess was that a majority of fly fishers here might not be familiar with many bamboo rods. I think glass, graphite and boron are pretty well accepted by the vast majority of fishers.
I have no problem with you taking this thread to express an off-subject item…
To me bamboo is not off the subject because I believe that most fly fishers know about bamboo. It is deeply embedded in the history of our sport. Up until about the late 1970’s to early 1980’s inexpensive bamboo rods were readily available at the local fly shop, tackle shop, even the local hardware stores. They weren’t always the best examples of top quality bamboo rods but they were bamboo available to the general fishing public.
Ah well it is your post and to each their own. I have plenty of graphite and glass too. I guess it is just that I prefer bamboo, then glass and last graphite, boron or whatever composite we have. To me to be a good rod it has to challenge me somewhat. Modern graphite/composite rods just don’t do that.
Bit off topic, but we don’t get upset. Any discussion is interesting.
Now that is funny.![]()
WE didn’t exclude bamboo, Byron did…it’s his thread after all.
A presentation grade McFarland glass rod. Spruce Creek 7’ 4wt 3-piece.
How did I know you would recognize my sense of humor, eh?
Must be all those years spent together here on this board.
Thanks F.G.![]()
Relax. It is a bit of a ribbing, no pun intended of course, that I am giving him.![]()
I do prefer bamboo over the other types though. Well, okay I like fiberglass too.
As someone once said: “an excuse to get thier panyt hose in a twist with the originator of the thread.”
Someone did say that Byron…uummm.
