Sorry for the delay, friend. Too many tying shows and presentations lately, along with fishing and work…no excuse, but it has slowed me down a bit. I’ll get the pics and recipe out asap and then I’ll get a FOW submission put together, but I think I owe herefishy a pattern for the FOW first. So much to do, so little time - but never fear, it’s on it’s way!
I’ve been excited by this old Nymph pattern that I found on this site… The panfish have gone crazy for it this spring… It is the Jax Suicide Nympth… I think the red egg sack makes the fish go after it…
I came up with my own pattern last summer before I went to CO to fish some tail waters where they are the main food source of the rainbows there. PM me with your address and I’ll send you a couple. Best Regards…
hNt, no pressure felt. Thanks for the interest in the pattern. I will show pics here along with the recipe with an entire photo essay to come along later as a FOW. Hope you can understand my chicken scratches…
This first fly is my KG’s Halfback/Foamback PMD Emerger , it is my favorite fly during the early Summer when these bugs are hatching:
Here is the recipe for this fly as well as the one below - just change materials and hook size for the species of bugs you’re imitating:
Hook: DaiRiki 125 size # 18/20 for midges and BWO’s and size # 16 for PMD’s Thread: Olive 70 Ultra Tail: Amber or Rust colored dubbing tied in as shuck - Amber for midges, Rust for PMD’s and BWO’s Rib: Chartreuse Uni wire ? x/small Abdomen: Tying Thread Thorax: Black dubbing ? picked out for BWO’s and midges; PMD colored Fine Dry Fly dubbing for PMD’s Legs: Picked out dubbing for BWo’s and Midges; PMD yellow CDC puff for PMD’s Wingcase: Electronics packing foam (For instructions on how to mount the CDC wing/legs go to the following FOW - same principle for CDC puff as with a hen feather: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthread.php?33983-KG-s-SOUTH-FORK-SPECIAL-Fly-of-the-Week-February-8-2010)
This next one is my KG’s Halfback/Foamback Emerger in a BWO or Midge tie:
And this last one is my KG’s Fullback/Foamback Emerger tied for BWO’s, with some alterations for use with midge emergences. This is my all-time favorite midge pattern during the late Fall, WInter, and early Spring:
Hook: DaiRiki 125 size #20/22 Thread: Black 70 Ultra Tail: Amber dubbing tied in as shuck; rust for BWO’s Rib: Chartreuse Uni wire ? x/small Abdomen: Tying Thread Thorax: Black dubbing ? picked out - (the photo shows me using an olive-dyed hackle for a BWO imitation) Wingcase: Electronics packing foam
There you have them. I will get the FOW submission done as soon as I can. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the pattern Kelly! I can’t wait to try them. I wonder if I explained to my wife that I can use the foam to tie up flies, will help talk her into getting a new flat screen TV?
That’s the stuff, and it does take a marker well, although I prefer to leave it white so’s I can see it better. From the fish’s perspective there’s nothing to see.
Okay, here’s the Mysis Shrimp pattern I came up with and fished, with much success, on the South Fork of the Snake last week:
Recipe:
KG’s Mysis Shrimp
Hook: DaiRiki 305, size #14
Thread: clear mono
Tail/antennae: SAAP High Vis - White
Flashback: UTC Mirage Tinsel, opal - large
Abdomen: small ‘bump’ of Ice Dub, pearl. Pick out after fly is finished and trim even.
Thorax: After pulling Mirage Tinsel over abdomen, bind down the tinsel along the length of the hook shank to the eye. Trim, and then continue wrapping hook shank until you have built up a tapered body with the clear mono tying thread. Coat several times with Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails.
I used a Sharpie for the eyes, but I’ve tied them before using melted mono. Fish didn’t seem to notice.
