Had a really good trip yesterday evening. And yes I did catch some fish [with 66-68 degree water I was surprized to find the bluegill in the channels hitting top water] and that was quite satifying. However, the best thing about the trip was a young man I met - about 11 or 12, I’d guess. His father has just taught him to cast a fly rod, had given him one of those “58 1/2 cent cards with 3 dozen flies on it” and told him to go get 'em! He was having a blast but wasn’t catching fish. The “flies” he had were much too large and had a ton of “stuff” tied on 'em. Poor fish couldn’t have eaten them if they had wanted to! And they did because they kept towing the flies around by the hackle. I pulled over and gave him a couple of my “homemade” poppers and water spiders. Watched him catch his first fish on a fly rod - that was one excited kid! His father doesn’t know what he missed.
I helped a young man catch his first trout on a fly this past spring.
The kid had seen a lot of trout caught on flies and wanted to give it a try. His father had told him that fly fishing was too hard, but the kid was determined. So dad got out his old rod (shakespear wonder rod…sweet)and sent him to me.
I explain to the boy about tapered leaders (he had strait mono on), gave him a couple of the fly of the day, and after a 10 minute casting lesson the kid caught himself a nice brookie.
Dad was a little red in the face.
The next week, when I saw the boy, I had a whole box of flies for him. Hooked for life.

Warms my heart as it did his, You will have an admirer forever and his tales of flyfishing will include you. There must be a heaven on earth. You’re a good gaurdian angel Donald.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles." - Doug Larson

Good for you folks! There is NOTHING like watching a young’n successfully apply what you’ve taught them!
Another couple examples of the sharing attitudes of FAOLers. SUPER!

I don’ know, tony. I went ice fishing one time and I might just take your carrier - no wait. I forgot about the brandy that we were required to have. Scrap that - ice fishing WOULD be better! <G>
