My son (age 6) caught this mongo sunfish out of City Lake in Rocky Mount, NC this afternoon. It’s the largest sunfish (that’s “bream” for y’all) I’ve ever personally handled. Depending on exactly what species it is, it may be one for the books. Could you try ID’ing the fish in the photo?
Red eared sunfish for sure and believe it
or not, the world record is about 5 1/2
pounds. It came out of Lake Moultrie in
South Carolina, my home waters. I routinely
catch them in excess of 12 inches here with
quite a few 15 and 16 inchers. Interesting
also, that I caught my first fish ever in
the same lake your son caught this beauty
in back in 1947.G Warm regards, Jim
FlyDrawer,
Can you imagine that baby on a 1wt? That’s one big sunny man! Reminds me of when those big bulls are around protecting the beds. Incredible time to dry fly 'em on light tackle.
Nice Bream! errr…I mean Shellcracker…Sunfish…panfish…whatever…
I’m about an hour or so due west of you in Wake Forest and I caught my personal best Bluegill over the Easter weekend in a local pond. It measured 10 iches which I thought was pretty big for a bream but yours is a whopper! Good going with your son!
Steve
PS- my fish pics are posted under “Nice Carolina evening…” down below aways.
I fish, therefore I swam.

Though Sam likes to fly fish, this particular lunker was brought to bay on a Shakespeare kid’s combo, about three feet long, with two dinky guides and a push-button reel.
Terminal tackle was a hook and a bobber, and the bait was a worm out of our own garden.
