What kind of fish is it.

Fished today with my step-son visiting from GA. Fished a creek not far from my house. Caught a lot of brim and yellow bass. Caught a nice fish on a size 12 bead head hare and hearl bugger.

Does anyone know what it is? Heavy scales, very colorful white horns or bumps on it’s head.

Could it be some species of Chub?
Doug

baby carp species? Just a wild guess. Sometimes I’m surprised by the looks of young carp which is why I threw it out. JGW

The colors are almost like a darter, but that doesn’t look like any darter that I’ve ever seen. You may be able to send the pic in to TWRA’s website and have them ID it.

Probably somebody’s discarded exotic aquarium fish. If it had a spot near the tail, it might go for a Peacock Bass. LOL

Ron,

I have always called them “hornyhead chubs”. Here is an article and picture:

I originally thought chub.
I think that might be it. Just never saw anything quite like it, up north. Probably breeding colors.

I think it might be a kind of goldfish

That is one of the strangest looking fishes, I’ve ever seen. Does this creek behind your house connect to a tributary of the Amazon River? I would have to vote for a discarded aquarium exotic. 8T

Ron,

This is off subject, but, did you smash your right thumb with a hammer or while unpacking?..

Looks like a Berkley Swimming Shad in Fire Tiger Color.

Greg

Looks a lot like a our Fall Fish…

Spawning male

Cool picture!!

Initially I was thinking maybe a Stoneroller…
Here’s a link to a bunch of “possibilities” (click the link, then scroll down)

But now I’m thinking it could be a River Chub…or (based on the scale shape/pattern) a Crescent Shiner or maybe a White Shiner in spawning colors.

What do you think?

Warren,

Don’t remember doing it, but I beat myself uf pretty good making the move. Finally getting to fish and heal a little bit.

I really think you should stop fishing the cooling pond down at the reactor…

Cool looking fish you caught there! Looking at the link from FishnDave, I’d say male bull chub in spawning colors.

It may just be a hornyhead which is known technically as a central stoneroller.

I don’t think so, Joe. The mouth isn’t right. That’s more important that mutable factors, like color. I vote for some sort of goldfish or koi as a second choice. The overall shape makes me think that it is something in the creek chub & fallfish genus. I wonder if creek chubs hybridize with goldfish/koi?

Ed

looks like a fallfish with some kind of wild coloration.

agree…it’s an erotic of some type.
