What is best way to find tippet end?

Seems like I have to put something at the tippet end to find it on my spool. It is very frustrating. Are there some tips for finding the tippet end or a method storing line?

my spools have the bands with the holes in them, i just leave the end sticking through the hole

If your spool does not have a band around it, use a pony tail holder around the spool, with the end sticking out somewhere along a side.

Ditto to that.

Fly reel Dots. They are a sponsor on here and work really well.

At a show last week, I picked up and looked at a spool of 10x

I couldn’t even tell if there was any tippet on the spool

-bands that come with the tippet
-hair dooees
-rubber bands
-a slit cut in the plastic of the spool that you put the end of the tippet thru

Pony tail holders, also known as scrunchees, and I push my bobbin threader through it and pull the tippet end right through the scrunchee and then put the scrunchee around the spool.

I’ll Second the Fly Reel Dots!

I second having the “le strap” thing on the spools with a hole in them. They come standard on all the Rio Tippets, I believe.

I took the question to mean “tippet spool”, not reel spool. For the reel spool, nothing better than Fly Reel Dots. For the tippet spool, any that I have do have the slit in the edge as BBW posted. I haven’t had a problem, as every spool of tippet I have had has one. If you use mono line, cut one in, use a dot , or a band.

Oh for reel spools, I just leave about 5-6" out of the end of the reel, instead of reel the tippet right onto the reel.

The tippet can also bury itself under a loop of fly line and then work its way down to the backing. One day when you have a big fish on, That piece that buried when you weren’t looking could jam when the fish makes a run into that backing, Pop, and you lose the fish.

I read that last bit in an Article that JC wrote a while ago, Ever since then I have never reeled my tippet onto the spool. I even completely spooled all my reels to make sure it hadn’t happened.

I did look at the Reel Dots and was interested until they wanted $19.50 for shipping. I have a spool of Rio tippet material and that band does work well. I’ll try a scrungee to see which I like best, don’t have one because of lack of hair!!!

Donat…WRONG!!..shipping for Reel Dots is $2.00. Sorry, but I felt a need to correct that immediately.

Chris…Try the Fly Reel Dots. Keeps your tippet end secured “off” the spool. When I string my rod, & while fishing, the removable “dot” just goes on a velcro patch on my vest, shirt, or wader pouch. I have never lost one.

Fly Reel Dots are a “must have”, IMHO!!..and I am not alone.

I use Umpqua or Cabelas tippet in the 100-meter spools, and they come with those scrunchies. I like to leave an inch or two out when I clip a piece off. If you lose the end, you can slide the scrunchie around against the wraps of the tippet and a loop will rise up. Grab it and pull, is almost always within a foot or so of the end.

The slots on the sides work well, EXCEPT when you have stacked three or four of the spools together, at which point you can’t get to the tag ends in the slots.

As for the holes in the bands, like Rio does: Anyone ever wonder what pulling that tippet out of that hole does to it? I stick with the off-to-one-side retrieval.

Thanks Chris. I leave a bit out of the reel (never wind it all in) too but do hold it to the side of the reel with a FR dot.

Fly Reel Dots are the way to go. My favorite Dot is of a Sierra Bow. If you own several reels and spools Jerry has a Dot you can write down your line info on. Sure is a big help.

They make great stocking stuffers too.

Thanks Ohiotuber, I went back to the site and the $19.50 is for EXPRESS shipping. I didn’t notice the drop down for alternate shipping. 1st class mail is $2.00.

Dot Dot Dot I’m a fan of the Dots, makes the reel look cool too…

Donat,
No problem…I couldn’t believe it when I saw $19.50, & I even checked his site to find the large $ amount…never did find it. I plead “old eyes”!
Try the Dots…you’ll LOVE 'em, & as I’ve told Jerry (Dotman), they do well on spinning & casting reels too.
