What flies for the Idaho Fish-In?

I’ll be taking mostly Oct Caddis and Red Humpies. Plus my tying gear. What will you be bringing?

danbob’s ‘Yellow Sally’ too.

PMDs, and I seem to recall fishing a BWO hatch or two. 90% big hairy caddis, tho.

Oh, and chocolate chip cookies. They work on the blue and fuzzy ones.

Yeah! Yellow Sallies. That’s the one I was forgetting. I have BWO’s and PMD’s. Let’s not forget Al’s SHWAPF. Maybe in Rust, Red, and Yellow. Peacock body might be cool too.

That ‘yellow sally’ fly of the week is Ken Sample’s design, not mine! I just did the photos and article. And he’s renamed the style the ‘dipper’ since he ties it in many different color combos now, not just yellow. It works great in Adams colors, too, year-round here in Colorado. He’s started tying them for sale locally now.

For Idaho I’ll have a rack of yellow to tan to brown dippers ranging from #6 to #20, with most around #6, #8 or #10. Black ants in #16-#22. Goddard Caddis in #8-#16. Soft hackle wets in my usual array of sizes and colors (thanks to REE and VEE for turning me onto SHW flies last year in Idaho! I use them all the time now). That’s about it – I plan to fish with only 2 fly boxes, and staqsh the rest of the pile back at camp.

See you there! Watch out for the vicious attack turkeys!

DANBOB

I’m bringing my vice this year so someone can teach me how to tie dippers and SWH. ( hint hint )

My fly of choice last year was a PTN because I suck at dry fly fishing. I caught mostly whitefish till JC told me " If your catching whitefish go to the other end of the pool " It worked and I managed to catch a few cutts.

Danbob If your talking to Ken you might mention that some of us might buy some dippers from him if he brings some. ( another hint )

What color and size of October caddis should one tie?

Wow there are Turkeys in Idaho???

Who knew???

GnuBee – BIG October caddis! #4, #6, #8, #10. I used #8 the most last year.
DANBOB

I am thinking of tying up some “Corn” patterns for Lowell. If the fishing gets slow maybe I can cast to a few turkeys?

Gnu Bee,
I’m going to pirate my own thread here. We are considering doing a dutch oven tomato soup. All you will need to bring is crackers.
Seriously, I’m thinking about some kind of Italian goulash dish. So, garlic bread and Ceasar’s Salad would be a nice side. We’ll have to see what pans out.
Linda says HI and we both look forward to seeing you again.

Joe, I am all over that “Italian goulash.” Love the stuff; save some for us!

JC ,
Done Deal.
We both look forward to sharing time with you and LF. AND GNU BEE!

Found a new October Caddis pattern that I will be sharing during the tying sessions in the evenings. If you have the newest copy of Northwest Fly Fishing, the pattern is in there.

Getting a little antsy here. Gotta cast some rods, tie some flies and pack. Oh wait… it’s still a couple weeks off. Dang it!

Joe,
Along with all the other nice flys that have been mentioned… I might suggest a renagrade… size 18/20… worked for me… last year… (2 fish in two casts at the right spot) … the catching interupted a very nice conversation… but, we do what we have too… I also used a size 10 EHC tied on a hopper hook last year… took quite a few fish… and in the past I have used a modified Yak Stone tied in a burnt orange… worked well… and a few others have mentioned that they did well with it also…
Looking forward to seeing you there!

This is my favorite fly for October caddis. It is intended to be skated and when the fish are on to them it can be very exciting. Two years ago when the caddis were thick I went through half a dozen of these in an afternoon and was hooking fish left and right. No other pattern could match this one’s effectiveness.

I’m sorry to say that I won’t be able to make it this year. It wasn’t the best summer to be a fishing guide in Montana due to fires and drought so I’m going to have to work extra hard in September to make up for that. There’s an outside chance but it’s not looking good. Get some of those flies, you won’t regret it.

Benjo,
Interesting looking fly. Were do you buy them, or do you tie them yourself. I’d be inclined to buy some if I knew where to locate them.
Thanks,

I am with Z on the EHC size 10 caddis…actually tying a few up right now. I also have done well with smaller size EHC caddis…size 14 have done well for me the past few years there go figure.

Benjo, sorry my friend, you will be missed. But, perhaps I have a chance in the distance event!? See ya next year for sure; plan ahead!
