What are some good Clouser colour colours for big browns?

Let me rephrase my original post:

What are some good Clouser colour combos for big bruiser browns…(wow…the alliteration is amazing!)

Black & white, Blue & white ,all white. in the Fall yellow and white. I put a few strands of flash in all and I tie them with bumbbell eyes so they fish point up like a keel fly (helps with rocks) I fish them mostly on sinktip (10’) or sinking head (20’) lines big fish, like big people like dinner to come to them! lol

Where do you expect to be fishing?

In my area (western New York State) olive over white is a good combination for the Great Lakes and the lower sections of their tributaries. Others that also work are brown over yellow, blue over white and all black. I usually catch most of my lake-run browns in the L.Ontario streams in late winter/early spring when the fish are in the creeks looking to feed. I don’t go in fall when the browns are on their spawning run.

I have fished Montana and Wyoming rivers for browns with streamers a few times, and brown over yellow was the best Clouser I used there.

I also like using some yellow for the big browns. A splash of red never hurts!

Hey GrsdLnr,

Thanks for the blue over white suggestion. I went to the Grand River yesterday and landed eight fat little browns 10"-13" on that blue and white clouser. I had other strikes and follows to boot!

Thanks

Dear Andrew,

If you are ever fishing in high and/or off colored water think contrasts.

All white and all black are awesome colors for trout. Tie them on size 2 hooks.

For most of my streamer fishing for trout I have switched to the Clouser Foxee minnow tied in colors that best represent the common forage fish in the stream.

I like brown over tan, black over silver, grey over white, it all depends on the color of the most common minnows.

I tie my Foxee’s way more bulky than Clouser does and I include a pile of flash material, either Krystal Flash or Flash-a-bou. I tie them in sizes 6 to 10 using Tiemco 200R hooks or the equivalent.

To me, they are like live bait without the hassle of the Fra-Bill bait can and the sewing needle.

Tim Murphy

Grand River, Ontario I presume? Fergus/Elora area? One of my favorite streams - glad I could be of some help.

Mr. Murphy’s advice on Foxy Clousers is spot-on. In brown they also make a good crayfish imitation - smallmouth bass love them.

PaulM: “A splash of red never hurts.” Are we talking Clouser/Mickey Finn here?
