What Are JV Rooster Feathers Used For?

I see that Denny offers JV Hens and I understand their use in wet flies and soft hackles. Are JV rooster cape and saddle feathers also used for wets? Are they streamer feathers?

Thanks,
Ed

JV roosters are 26 week old roosters. Dry fly quality is as good as the big boys. Yes, they might have a few sleeves and not all hackles are as perfect as you would find on a 52 week old bird. The saddles are shorter than, say a grade #3 but just as good to tie dries with. The capes normally run between a grade #2 and grade #3. One can expect to tie quite a few dries from one JV rooster as I include both cape and saddle from one of these younger birds. All of the spades are left on the bird so you do get a lot of them. My price is $40 + S/H. I can sell them at this price because I have less feed and time invested in them. I also do not stock a lot of them and am normally out of most colors. They are a very good buy.

Denny,
Thanks. You’ll be hearing from me.

I have a few of his JV Roosters and they are awesome!

They’re for fending off swamp witches. YOU, my friend, better get a couple!

I think that you read that wrong, concentrations tend to attract swamp witches…
I wonder if anybody knows a Swamp Wtch who can tell us which is the case.

No… I’ve got what attracts them! Starling, partridge, and quail skins all together. If I had a snipe skin, I’d be VERY concerned. But alas, I don’t.

They are SWEET!!! Have two of them and wish I money for more!!!

Kid, you’d better look out. I’m clean out of quail and that those skins might attract ME. If I were to show up, I’m pretty sure that Swamp Witch Betty would be there in short order.

Ed

P.S. Have you ever used quail breast feathers for mayfly wings?

No sir, sure haven’t. My experience with tying “legit” trout flies is somewhat limited, especially dries.
