What and where to fish around Knoxville, Tennesse

I would be interested for information on what is available and where to fish within 100 miles of Knoxville, Tennesse. Will be in the area July 21 to July 25. Would appreciate information on type of flies, need of waders, or should consider renting a boat.

Thank-you

REW

Rew,

Head office is in Nashville, and few of 'em flyfish, … I’ll be back tomorrow with info (I hope).

Read the current newstand issue of Fly Rod and Reel magazine. Has an article by Ian Rudder, the local guru in that area ,describing all the streams there. Also, a good shop in town there, but an extraordinarily good one in nearby Townsend, TN, called Little River Outfitters-they have a website-google it.

I’m just getting into fly fishing (first post actually), and I’ve only been in the Knoxville area about a year. However, there are a bunch of places to fish around here. The first two that come to mind are the Clinch River (tailwater of the Norris Dam) up out of Clinton TN (North of Knoxville about 20 MI on hiway 75) and the Smoky Mountain National Park area - the Little River out of Townsend is beautiful and only about an hour south of Knoxville.

There are a couple of really good local fly shops that can provide information on current hatches and fishing conditions.

The Clinch you have to be careful about time of day - if TVA is generating power there you really can’t fish without a boat. The Little River doesn’t have that problem, but if you fish it on the weekends you have to contend with lots of folks sharing the park with you - tubers are common.

Hope this helps at least a little.

Abe

On my site I have a couple of local shops listed and a list of some of the flies used in the smokies area. The smokies are only about a 45 min drive from downtown Knoxville. And as stated the clinch river is also a good spot right now. There is a great shop here in Knoxville, called the Creel. John

I wish you all everlasting flies and tight lines.

Hey, Im kinda knew myself. Been learning the hard way in the Smoky Mountains. If you want to catch the big fish (but easier) go to the clinch. If you want to catche the small fish (but much harder) go catch the natural trout in the Smokies. Go to [url=http://www.littleriveroutfitters.com:34360]www.littleriveroutfitters.com[/url:34360] for info. Also, check out Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia by Jimmy Jacobs. Only a section of the book is about Tennessee, but it has many Tennessee trout streams in it. This book has helped my find a bunch of the trout streams in the area. Good Luck!

Go to Townsend, TN, and visit the Little River Outfitters. It is on the right as you head into town. Townsend sits at the entrance to the Smoky Mountains National Park. The Little River runs through the Smokey Mountains. This is a nice trout stream and a VERY beautiful location. I fished it a week ago!! First time I tried a furled leader too. You MUST get the hatch report!!! It will be fun!!!

Fishing that area is pronounced “Holston”, as in the Holston River, just below the dam @ South Holston Lake, a place called Oscelola Park.

Thanks to all of you that replied, I can start planning for a day or two of fishing when I get to Knoxville.

Thank-you again

Even though I wasn’t the original poster on this topic, thanks to all who replied. I was in Knoxville this past weekend visiting with my wife’s family, and used the information to help plan my day of fishing, while my wife shopped.

The folks at Little River Outfitters were very helpful, and steered me in the right direction as far as finding fish, as well as avoiding tubers on the river-and there were a ton of them. I must admit I was a little PO’d at them beforehand. I e-mailed them for info on July 4th, and received no response (and still haven’t), but when I walked into the shop, I was treated the way a fly shop (or any store) should treat their customers.

I work only so that I can afford to fish
