What a difference a week makes

This time last week, I was enjoying some late autumn fishing for bass, bluegill, and even brougt in a crappie. They were hitting gurgle pops and a soft hackle dropper about 18" below. The fishing was amazing with strikes on most casts and about half of the strikes brought fish to hand.

Then, on Sunday, something wicked this way comes. The nights have been cold for a couple weeks now but the days warmed up and fishing was still strong in the late afternoon.

Well, it turned to winter the past few days. Highs in the 40’s lows in the lower 30’s. If the weather warms up for a few days, there may be one or two days left, but pretty much fly fishing for warm water species here in northern Kentucky is over for the year.

One can fish with other types of gear late into winter if you can get the lue/bait deep enough to find fish in the creek channels and off deep water points. However, fly fishing from shore is pretty much over.

From now until late March / early April, it’s pretty much tying flies, reading about fishing, and a couple trips to the tail waters chasing winter trout.

30 to 40 degrees is where you’re supposed to store beer, not live! I thought this was the ‘warm water’ section. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, glad you got to catch a few before winter set in.

I just had a buddy bring over a 6 wt Redington reel to put on a 6 wt rod that I’ve had for a while but didn’t ever use (on sale, cheap, couldn’t resisit, etc). There’s a very remote jungle river that I’m itchin’ to visit to see what’s there. I’m sure there will be a selection of various barbs, snakehead fish, gourami and probably a few others. I wish we had Bluegills and Bass here, but I must say that I’m pretty happy catching the wide variety that is available.

Keep warm buddy!

Cheers,
Dave

Phuket, Thailand

I have been known to store soft drinks in the garage during winter. Nature’s 'fridge.

I guess grass is always greener. I’d like the opportunity to fish a remote jungle stream with snakehead, barbs and other fish that we would consider exotic around these parts.

Don’t get me wrong, an 18" largemouth bass smashing a popper or a hand sized bluegill nailing a nymph is enough to get your blood flowing for darn sure.

Now, the long 5-6 month wait until it all starts over again.

At least winter gives me some time to stock up on flies, play my guitar, read about fishing (and other topics) and get my gear in shape for the next season.

Jeff, frost on the car roof last night which is never a good sign.

Khao-sok, enjoy the fish that you have there. I’m sure that some of your top predators give a very good account of themselves. From what I’ve heard about the snakeheads, you should have a great time. BTW, welcome to the group. Let us hear from you on a regular basis. 8T

Hi Jeff and 8T,

I’m originally from Virginia and I certainly miss to Bluegills. My all-time favorite fishing spot, Backbay, was ruined by the corp of Engineers. Milfoil weed was taking it over, now it’s completely dead.

My best day was over 10 Bluegills over a pound and one was 2 1/2 Ibs! It was so big it didn’t look like the same species.

There are several species of snakeheads and they’re all pretty vicious. They’ll bite through steel leaders sometimes.

Thanks for the ‘welcoming’ 8T. I’ve been watching this forum for a good while and love it.

Take care,
Dave

Welcome from me too Dave. Take your camera along please,

Thanks buddy! I find this to be a very polite forum… I wish we weren’t so far apart. I could use some flyfishing buddies. Almost everyone over here throws bait or lures… a disgusting practice.

I’ve got quite a few pics on one of my websites, but I don’t know how to show just the picture without linking to the page and perhaps being accused of advertising.

I think I’ll sign up for Flickr or one of those photo sites. When done, yep, I’ve got some doozies.

Jeff, don’t worry, you’ll head out at least 2 more times…then decide, it’s done…trust me.
