I just received my 2010 Fishing catalog from Cabela’s. I used to like looking at the Cabela’s catalogs and perusing all the fishing gear. However, this issue seems to be exclusively geared toward the Professional Spiny Ray Tournament Fisherman. The had spinning reels starting at $700 and working their way down to the “Average Joe” (pun intended). They had bait casting reels, spinning reels, and even mooching reels. They had tons of rods. Spinning, Casting, Trolling, Boat and even Crappie Poles. They had so many different lines available, that it would take a panel of pro’s to decide what line you needed depending on application, weather, structure, water clarity and what kind of platform you’re fishing from. Hooks covered the full gambit of design including circle hooks to treble. Lures were never ending and started with soft plastic, semi soft plastic, hard baits, lipped baits, lipless baits, articulated baits and baits that should not be called baits. Downriggers, GPS included in you new Sonar unit, anchors that don’t need hands to operate, and boats. Ya, even boats offered for cheap monthly payments. You’re probably asking by now, “what’s your point Joe.” Here it is.
Not one single mention of fly fishing. It’s as if fly fishing doesn’t even exist in their marketing strategy. If they have 100,000 square feet of shop available, not even 1 square foot was dedicated to fly fishing.
I don’t know if I’ll even give another thought to buying from Cabela’s and they are just 5 miles from my door.
Should we BELLY-ACHE? SHOULD WE BOYCOTT?
Belly Ache; YES. Boycott; NO.
Just Saying
Cabela’s fly fishing has its own catalog.
the fly catalog came out a couple of months ago.
Eric
Yup, FF has it’s own catalog.
Their fly fishing catalog has 189 pages dealing with nothing but gear relating to fly fishing and fly tying.
Ya Joe and HA HA, I got one and you don’t:D
Guess I didn’t get my Fly Fishing Catalog. I’m just dismayed that their “Fishing” catalog excluded Fly Fishing. As if it didn’t exist. Kind of felt like we were left out.
:D:D:DFunny, I don’t feel left out a bit!!
My cabela’s fly fishing catalog is real nice!
Would you like me to loan you mine??
Heres a little sneak peak:

Hey Joe,
All in all though Hook & Hackle and Elkhorn get my business most of the time, they are hands down the best for service!
A Giant Thumbs Up for these two companies…
Lotech,
Now you need to post “What a CROCK, Cabela’s!” I didnt get my Fly Fishing Catalog :D
Joe’s wife probably wisely hid it from him. (jk)
Eric
Lotech Joe,
Be thankful you even got a catalog. For some reason I don’t get any, with the exception of Hook-n-Hackle, though I’ve requested to be put on numerous mailing lists.
Wait a second…Now that I think about it, that guy that was down stream from me the other day looked alot like my mailman!!! ;)

The only catalog I receive is Bass Pro Shops. You wanna feel left out as a fly fisherman? Take a gander in there. They actually have some decent, decently-priced gear if you go to their website, but their fly fishing section of their catalog is made up of about four pages, sandwiched between the boating gear and what seems like 75 pages of various shapes and colors of plastic worms.
The one thing that catalog did confirm for me was that, no matter how much I spend on fly fishing gear, it will ultimately be cheaper than the $20 crankbaits they offer. I saw that price and immediately, out of curiosity, began scanning for the quantity included at that price - result = one piece of tackle.
lol I know my wife has tried to hide my ff catalogs from me, but guilt always gets the better of her.
I dunno, I never really buy any fly fishing stuff from them. I am in the “support the local shop” crowd. About the only time I even purchase fly fishing related items there is when I need an “emergency” item (for my trip the following day and the local shops are closed. However I do purchase gun related items from them.
5 miles from Cabelas… you are one lucky guy!!! Forget the catalogs and go strait to heaven!
What if he is 5 miles from Cabela’s? Doesn’t that make it his “local” fly shop? The people who work there are local, the state or municipality or both get the tax revenue…seems local to me. I have been in the Boise Cabela’s fly shop, and it is STOCKED…as is the Reno Cabela’s and the Manteca, California Bass Pro.
That said, my local shop is in Sacramento, will not drive hours to the others…they don’t save me any money
You live 5 miles from a Cabela’s and your whining about not getting a catalog??? Doesn’t get any more ‘local’ than that no matter how big the ‘fly shop’ is.
Of course it is local as he is only a short distance away. Maybe I should have worded my post differently. Something along the lines of: I am more of the “avoid the big box places when I can type of guy”.
Let me know if you ever get a BPS fly fishing catalog? It will never happen. I belive that cabelas has alot more for the fly fisherman and women than BPS ever thought of having. You would think that with Taneycomo and the White river just a stones through from BPS’s main shop, they might have a good supply for fly fishing, but not so much. As far as I can see keep shoping at Cabelas and support the people that support our sport (passion, hobby).
… obsession …
