Anticipating our trip to visit friends in Carmel California, my friend Andy sent me THIS pic of a Jaguar in his BACK YARD taken today. THis is a beautiful bayside residential area just South of the Carmel River on US 1. Mr. J. Chambers of Cisco fame is just three doors away. Who would have thought…???

PS: I will certainly pay a bit more attention on my morning constitutionals. Second pic illustrates his back yard similar to AFRICA
Jaguar or Ocelot? Many exotic pets in Southern California. Can’t tell for sure, but it looks like about 40+ pounds. Most Jags are 80-100+ pounds. Does however look like Jaguar spots.
Where I come from, we call that thing a bobcat. Look at the head, nothing at all like a jaguar. Ears match a bobcat, spots match a bobcat, size is way too small (look at the wall in each picture, it is about waist-high), shape and posture match a bobcat looking at something…
I should have known bobcat. The pattern on the back of the ears. And a jaguar doesn’t usually tuck it’s tail quite like that. Of course, Bob doesn’t need to tuck his tail.
My wife took our grandaughter up the 1 a few years ago on a photo shoot. Got some amazing pics of California condors. Never know what you’re going to see out here.
On the other hand, we’re not talkin asphalt and brick wall to wall. The water is the Carmel River State Beach and across the bay is Point Lobos. There’s plenty of room to hide and plenty of critters to eat BUT who would have thought it could support a bobcat. This one looks like he’s accustomed to the “ambiance” .

Pretty neat to see a bobcat sitting still. I’ve only seen them moving out and about and never thought to take a photo of one. Nice to know they pose for the camera. Yesindeedy.
With the Santa Lucia Preserve close by there are plenty of wildness for wildlife to thrive. Imagine having a bobcat visit your neighborhood. Cool stuff.
Hey TF,
Thanks for the mention of the Santa Lucia Preserve. I just Googled it and it sounds like a place I’d love to explore, where allowed, and “shirley” will.
