Weight for a fly

Can anyone offer any suggestions for weighting a fly similiar to a San Juan worm?
The thing is I need the fly to sink quick enough to get down in a stream current, but I dont want it to drop like a bag of hammers.
Is there any type of materials (other then the quick sink dubbing) that will allow a fly to sink quickly?
Thanks

I just use lead wire. The more I wrap the faster it’ll sink. You can also just tie in a bead lead/tungston(sp) right in the middle of the hook.

You can also use colored copper wire to wrap, in the case of the san juan worm, the vernille to the hook. If you build up to the thickness of the vernille it adds a lot of weight. If you want less weight use thread wraps underneath or wrap a smaller section. The colored wire is available in many colors and thicknesses at craft stores. It is also very inexpensive.

Hi tippet7,

I often tie a large bead (brass, silver, black, or copper) in the center of the worm’s body. Take care & …

I keep spools of lead around that range from .010" to .030". I would think the thinnest lead wire would work. The worm will sink quickly because it is thin and offers little resistence to the water (compared, say, with a woolly worm) so less weight is indeed necessary. I would think you should try a couple with 10 wraps of .010" lead and a couple with 5 wraps.
